Insect Collecting

in #homeschool7 years ago (edited)

Hello, my name is Joshua. I am The Homeschool Kid.
Today I am going to show you how I collect insects.
So far I have caught one cockroach, three moths, one butterfly, and six beetles. Did you know that there are more different kinds of beetles than other bugs?
I am doing this to learn about insects and to enter my collection into our county fair.
When I find an insect I put it in a jar called an Insect Killing Jar.
This is a picture of the Insect Killing Jar. There are three cotton balls in it. They are soaked in Nail Polish Remover. Then there is a piece of cardboard on top. The Nail Polish Remover in the jar is a chemical so it kills the insect.

I am going to tell you a story of how I caught it.
I was exploring in the woods behind my house when I found it. So I ran home and got a jar. When I came back it was still there. And I put the jar on the moth.
And that is how I caught a Luna Moth.

cool man! I'm guessing the main ingredient that kills them is the acetone in the nail polish remover.

No aceton will kill them slowly and make then hard to prepare... it will probably alter colors too... you need ethyl acetate... it is also used in some nail polish remover.... in many countries the acetone nail polish remover is blue and the acetate one is pink (it smells very sweet too)...

Thanks for the photos Joshua. Here's my moth collection, I collect more every day. @ironshield

If you realy like insects and intend to collect them you will have plenty to learn :
Preparation:

  • use special insect pins to pin them
  • each type of insect has a conventional way to be spread (there is plenty of info on the internet)
    Collecting :
  • get a sweeping net or make on with you parents and then sweep vegetation.
  • You can make traps to collect otherwise very discrete insect species (inform yourself about them)

There is so much to say about entomology research ot and good luck with it. It is a hobby where you stil get surprises after 50 years of doing it.

Hello Joshua! You did a great job on this story. I upvoted you. :-)

Hi Joshua, I was also homeschooled! The greatest part of being homeschooled is having the time to explore in the woods and do fun projects like this!

Good luck at the Fair! Let us know how you did!

Hey nice story and I guess it was also pretty fun.

Great job, keep up the fantastic work!!!

Sounds like a great project Joshua. Well done! I hope to be hearing more from you on here about how to have some adventures and learn at the same time!
