What is waste?
Waste have many definition, one of the Chinese definition said that waste is wealth in a wrong hand.
Other definition said that waste is anything that is no longer of use to the disposal. It is also defined as any unavoidable material that result from an activity or industrial process, but has no immediate economic value or demand and must be disposed of.
So why should we manage waste?
Waste management seeks to gradually reduce waste with the ultimate aim of eliminating those that have the potential to cause harm to people and the environment. In addition, it is a criminal offense to handle and dispose of hazardous waste carelessly on any land and in any territorial water globally.
If this waste is not managed properly, is going to be a threat to both terrestrial and aquatic life. To manage waste we need to discover the source and we should be able to classify waste to enable us discover the solution to it. Below are waste classification
We have three classes of waste
DOMESTIC WASTE sources are from kitchen, garden, office, paper, food, wood, sewages
INDUSTRIAL WASTE e.g scrap metals, cardboards packaging, plastic, organic acid, chemical waste, oil waste, gaseous emission.
HAZARDOUS WASTE These are waste that are potentials hazards to human health and environment. They are usually corrosive ignitabke, explosive, reactive, or toxic and there fore they must receive further treatment before disposal. e.g dangerous waste, infectious waste, radioactive/nuclear waste e.g hospital waste pesticides.
In my next article I will discuss how to manage this and the effort both government and companies are making to fight this.

Waste management is something that's really neglected in Nigeria, most people don't even care where they drop their waste. I'm interested in seeing what you have to say about managing waste in Nigeria. Great post.
