Norwegian Forest Cat

We have seen how popular the Maine Coon cat has become over the years, even contending with the popular Persian longhair cat. There is another notable cat that has gained recognition over the years, it is closely linked to the Maine Coon and is often referred to as the cousin of the Maine, this is called the Norwegian Forest Cat. The biggest similarity lies in the survival within forest environments. Both cats have adapted to survive in similar terrains and the characteristics are uncanny. The Norwegian Forest also carries a thick and dense fur to brave the harsh winters around the forestland. During the warmer months, the Norwegian Forest Cat undergoes a shedding process to dislodge unneeded fur, allowing a cooler temperature and almost breathable coat.

Like its spiritual cousin, the Norwegian Forest cat will carry itself with great stature yet there is a sense of elegance about it. This cat will develop for a large part of its lifespan and may not reach its fully matured state until a great number of years have passed. As the name suggests, its heritage is from the country of Norway and the lineage of the cat is not as clear. Some may even account that the cat has roots that date back to even Viking voyages and a great number of genes were added to the breeding pool over the years. It is clear that a great diverse range of genes have circulated into the Norwegian cat strand as time has gone one. As a result of this, a great deal of variation has occurred in this breed and there are many beautiful colours and patterns to be explored. Prospective owners will have a great selection to choose from.

Semi-Long haired cats are longer than the shorthair but considerably shorter than the longhair breeds. They will shed considerably less hair in comparison to the longhaired relatives and the hair left around the house will be manageable if a regular grooming regime is put into place. If a grooming regime is ignored, build up of fur can occur and can quickly spiral out of control if left unattended. Helping with grooming will help with both hygiene and aesthetic improvement and is a much needed essential for all cats, regardless of fur type. The Norwegian is a great choice for cat owners and they will enjoy the interaction of this cat as they love humans.
