M*A*S*H M*O*N*D*A*Y*S Welcomes You!!
Cowboy ~ Season One ~ Episode Eight
After being refused a stateside trip
to make sure his wife is not committing adultery, a displeased chopper pilot, known as the Cowboy, tries to kill Henry.
Episode eight, IMHO is the first episode to really stray
from the comedic and is very simply not that funny. The subject matter of a tormented MASH chopper pilot trying to be injured badly enough to be sent home to reconnect with his girl is a maddening feeling many have experienced in different degrees. I remember well dating a Kiwi who was living in England and had to go back there after a whirlwind trip to Canada. We met during her trip. It makes me really feel for the chopper pilots situation.
There are definitely some light hearted moments in this episode for me, don’t get me wrong. And the cast always does their very best with the scripts they are given!
Speaking of the chopper pilot,
his stage name is Billy Green Bush, born William Warren bush and he is 82 years young. He has had what I would call a moderate career as many aspiring actors have and here is a little blurb on the roles he was typically typecast in.
Billy Green Bush
Bush is a character actor, typically projecting in his screen appearances the good-ol'-boy image. He portrays mostly sheriffs and state troopers, although in his repertoire there are the occasional villains.
I think just about the coolest thing ever is that Billy is the father of Carrie who starred in Little House On The Prairie. One of my all time favourite shows as a kid.
MASH WIKIA is a treasure trove of information which you can read if you like MASH trivia like I tend to, so I’ll let you watch the episode and read and I'll just fill in the show outline as I like to do!
We are introduced to the Cowboy in the opening scene as he choppers in an injured soldier for surgery at the MASH 4077th.
After landing, he quickly collapses and is in need of surgery himself!
After surgery and while recovering, Cowboy talks to Hawkeye about trying to get home to see his wife. He is very worried she won't wait for him and will fall for some other guy in a cowboy hat!
After Henry denies leave for Cowboy to return home the episode turns a touch manic as Cowboy tries to 'off' Henry in a pretty sane, methodical way. Kiiiiind of funny?? Sorta not so muchish???
Numerous attempts are made on Henry's life by the distraught Cowboy.
Now everyone is afraid to go near Henry lest they get caught up as collateral damage in Cowboy's rampage, although it's not known at this time that it's Cowboy making the attempts!
Of course Radar is just what we need at a time like this!!
Cowboy finally gets Henry right where he wants him. In his chopper after offering to give him a ride out for some R&R to get away from the crazy person trying to kill him!
Just when it looks like Cowboy is going to finally snap and kill Henry, the letter he's been waiting for from his wife arrives telling him everything is okay and she's waiting for him back home. Situation diffused!!
Which definitely calls for a drink!!
And some laughs when Henry is left a little jumpy after all that has happened!!
I truly hope you enjoyed this episode of MASH with me.
