Internal consistency is the first step to maturity. Lack of internal consistency leads to plot convenience, asspulls and contrivance.
Pretentiousness comes from the viewers of a show placing high intellectual value on elements/scenes/etc than is present. Relativism will almost always lead to this. Shows that use ambiguity to replace depth, as opposed to ambiguity AND depth, are more likely to be the target of pretentiousness since they are unclear. Ambiguity accompanying depth can enhance a show depending on the execution.
Eva is pretty violent/explicit and to be honest is not that subtle at all with the characters telling what they think directly to the viewer and yet I think you would agree that it is mature. How is that possible?
Does the violence and talking directly to the audience detract from that. Would it be a better anime if those violent and not subtle parts were removed entirely?

They are still SHOWING AND THINKING ten times more than your average anime character

no it's what defines them, without it they have nothing
