Games on the GO

in #games10 years ago

It's safe to say Pokémon GO is definitely a thing. Despite limited availability, it's taking the territories where it has been released by storm. According to data released by SimilarWeb today, the app is already installed on more US Android phones than Tinder and is on it's way to overtake Twitter in number of Daily Active Users.

For those of you who don't know, the game makes Pokémon appear on your phone's screen as you walk around using the camera. These you can then capture for your collection, bringing the original monster capturing game neatly into the real world. Of course Augmented Reality was already a thing well before this, so the success of this particular title could still be a fad, but it certainly seems like the technology has potential as a gaming platform.

Ahead of my time as I am, I've thought up some other games which could use a similar treatment. You're welcome developers!

Sokoban

Sokoban, the Japanese title for "warehouse keeper", is a puzzle game in which the player pushes boxes around trying to get them into certain configurations. I feel a game following the same concept could make for hours of fun in any workplace.

Spy vs. Spy

Originating from the comic strip with the same name, the objective in Spy vs. Spy is to collect various secret items in a briefcase and escape the building before the opposing player, or the timer runs out.

Make the app pick random office items and off you go! Opponent participation is optional, which could lead to interesting.. bonus challenges, making this the perfect real life GTA for the rest of us.

Pinball

Like Sokoban but with a ball. Make sure you have good insurance.

Artillery

The granddaddy of games like Scorched Earth and Worms (I realize the titles I picked reveal rather a lot about my age), Artillery would make for a great AR game with the cubicle next to you. Again opponent participation is not necessarily required.

Snake

Do I really need to explain this one? Can be played anywhere, gets better with booze. For you anyway, but then level mobs are always supposed to be a bit moody right?

The more I think about this, the more games this'd work for. I'd probably exclude shooters though, considering the times, though an AR Splatoon could be fun. Anyone have any other good suggestions? Let's augment the crap out of that reality. It's the future!
