Post series, where I talk about the reason why I made this 1, 2 posts about dog cancer, this story is going to span all the way from my childhood straight to my adulthood, don’t know how many parts it will have, it really depends on how well my alcohol abused college mind remembers.

Continuing the story…

We had the breed and the name, what were we missing? We were missing the actual dog.
We had to choose a breeder, we wanted one from Portugal and we had no idea what we were looking for, we didn’t even know how much it would cost us…
Have you guys looked at the prices of breeds? Wait a sec… let me search on Google:

  • Yorkshire Terrier - 350€ (Didn't know the problems this one had, it seems they have skin allergies and something called Legg-Perthes which is a hip joint problem because of the lack of blood supply to the area)
  • Boxer - 600€ (same as the Bulldog)
  • Bulldog - 1200€ (nice… paying 1200 bucks for a breed full of genetic diseases, with respiration problems, infection problems, cancer problems, problems and more problems…)
  • Dalmatian - 350€ (Full of Kidney problems)

Just look at how expensive all of these breeds are!! Meanwhile, I can go to a local shelter, get a much healthier dog for… I won’t say free because in my local shelter we need to pay for the sterilization of bitches and studs, but it’s almost free, maybe 25 bucks… But we didn’t know this at the time! If I had known what I now know I would 100% get a dog from the local shelter. Yes, they can sometimes be more problematic, some of them have had a traumatic life!
I've seen all kinds of shelter dogs in my life and I must tell you, the only "bad apples" that I saw on the clinic were the ones with bad owners, some of them were probably better in the shelter than with their "pretend-owners". As long as you provide them nurturing, a good stable home and a solid education it all plays out. But what can I say... some people don't even know how to educate their own children how can I expect them to educate their dogs...

I, as a huge computer fanatic got on the internet searching around, I found two “trustworthy”, or as much trustworthy as they can be online, breeders, we spoke to both and one of them was not only near my home, but they were also expecting a litter in three months, hurray, I finally had chosen the breeder too!

The breeder sent us some photos of the mom and father, I still remember seeing the mother's photos and thinking how my dog was going to be, was he going to look like his mother? Was the going to look like his father? Or was he going to look like a mix between them?

Question of the day: Would you rather adopt or get a breed from a dog breeder?

Am not a friend of "Greeders" to many dogs without a home they make the problem worse.

Yup, and have you seen some of the breeders places? I've seen good breeders but i've also seen some of the worst! I've seen dog breeders that made 6 dogs live in a 2 meter by 2 meter small closet... that's just animal abuse to me!

All breeders suck in my opinion but yes there are some abominations here in the U.S many stuff them in wire cages where they hardly can move, basically like battery hens. These are big operations. The Amish are front and center in this :(

I think I prefer adopting one, since there are so many dogs out there waiting for a home and for someone to love them. I adopted the dog I have right now and she is a sweetheart.. She used to be scared with everything and now she is a superdog, confident, with lots of love to give.. Seeing the difference between then and now makes me a proud mama :)

I know exactly what you mean, i've seen that progress in shelter dogs so many times!! It's like they change to a whole new dog! I guess nurturing a little love can change any animal :) I'm glad you adopted and want to stick with the adoption route!

Thank you so much for reading, como back anytime
