Scientists Want to Give Birth to Prehistoric Animals - The Mammoth
Despite being extinct thousands of years ago, a scientist from a world renowned university is optimistic to be able to regenerate the hairy mammoth species to Earth.
Harvard University announced that it plans to restore the mammoth. This is expressed by George Church, professor of genetics from one of the world's leading campus.
Church says that he will use genetic engineering to create hybrid animals from a combination of mammoth and elephant, which will be born through an artificial uterus. It can be realized by making a decidua (membrane lining the uterus) using stem cells.
"We have a report containing such methods in general, including stem cell changes into the various networks needed, in this case the decidua," George Church
This project actually started in 2015, about four thousand after the mammoth who want to be re-realized extinct. The goal is to create species that have similar characteristics such as cold-resistant and fluffy animals.
To complete the project, researchers at Church laboratories at Harvard University have increased the quantity of edits of mammoth DNA that allow it to enter the elephant genome. Until now, the group reported that there are 44 mammoth hairy genes they have.
It is estimated, they still need about a decade until their mammoth species can be born. Even so, these predictions are still very likely to change.
The Church project is not the only study related to the animal. Earlier this year, there were a number of universities that successfully sequenced the genome from 14 different elephant species. They range from elephants from contemporary Africa and Asia to hairy mammoths and mastodons.
Sounds like the plot of Jurassic Park. That didn't turn out oo well for anyone.
