Millionka - Slums of Vladivostok!

in #life7 years ago

Hello everybody!

A small digression:

You, probably, are at a loss from my previous post. It's have all - loud name, earning tags, compassionate text, absolutely crumpled and insane ending! Sorry, but I needed this little experiment! Some of this post is true, some not. I was even ready to catch a few flags :) I really need your opinion about what I'm writing here - on steemit. I am also interested in making sure that my posts are really judged by their content. And I liked the reaction! I want to personally thank @ackza! He is not afraid to express his opinion! Thank you, bro! :)

Of course, I'm not going to sell anything, especially magnets for $50... It is important for me to know whether most of the voters read posts, not just press the button and leave comments not related to the post.

And now about the results.

  • The post did not hold in the "hot" section!

  • The post did not earn "as usual"

  • People were just shocked that I published such content :)

I'm glad, friends, that I am surrounded by living people! People who have their own opinion and are not afraid to express it! Especially if they see blatant shit, but not good content! :)

SD for this experiment will be trasferred to @steemcleaners

And now, time for post!

Let's start with history

Unsanitary conditions and bandits

Just 10 years after the founding of Vladivostok, in 1870, the city, especially its central square, looked like a big market. It was organized by the Chinese, who came here for a better life. There were a lot of them. And this quarter "Millionka" appeared in the city. The name is formed from the word million, clearly giving to understand the number of residents in this quarter! On a small, often built-up urban site, there were theaters, taverns, gambling and opium houses, brothels. "Millionka" was shrouded in an aura of gangsters romance!

"Millionka" is a special world of Vladivostok, a kind of state in a state that was governed by its own laws. Here everyone found shelter: there would be money, and small, because the availability of local "charms" made them so attractive.

The cramped shops, unsanitary conditions, frequent cases of contraband, collusion between dealers make the market the object of close police attention. Assistant to the police chief of Vladivostok - frequent guest here.

Here is what he wrote:

As the streets crossing the market, and adjacent to the quarter are full of clay mud; On the streets there was a fetid smell and puddles of water. In the aisle between the shops is dirty...

Of course, measures were taken, but they could not affect the usual course of life in "Millionka"!

And then was the revolution of 1917...

The influence of the Soviet

One of the first Soviet regulations concerning the life of the Chinese diaspora, including Vladivostok, was an order banning Chinese entry to Primorye for the purpose of earning. It is almost completely reduced the inflow...

However, there were still a lot of Chinese workers in the city (most of them worked in the port), and in this connection the new government considered conducting political work among the Chinese population one of the important directions of its activity.

But, despite all the efforts of the new government to involve the Chinese population in the new life, nothing has changed in the "Millionka".

The bureaucracy was very much hampered the Soviet regime!

Here is the description of the "Millionka" at those times:

"... spawn and refuge of the crimeworld, not only in Vladivostok, but also in the Far Eastern Territory... where small and large smugglers nest... Persons specially engaged in illegal shipment of people abroad, illegal traders, thieves and thieves-recidivists..."

After a couple of years it became clear that there was no way to do without repressive measures: endless resolutions were passed - on eviction of unregistered tenants, on repairing premises by homeowners, on putting in order adjacent territories ... but nothing changed.

But then control of this issue took Moscow... Was closed 97 houses and repressed 807 people! Within a few months (from May to December 1936), all the Chinese living in the "Millionka" district were registered. Some of them (about 3,700 people) went to China with the start of repressive actions, others - fled to the surrounding villages and some took Soviet citizenship. The houses were transferred to the management of enterprises and organizations.

"Millionka" today

Today's "Millionka" - slowly decaying quarter in the historic center of the city. Many living here do not have water and sewage systems...it is not profitable for the city!

Under the layer of technologies of the new century, it is increasingly difficult to discern the traces of the old life, and with every year irretrievably goes out the gloomy charm of this quarter, which for several decades excited the city with its eastern exotics.

That's the end of this story! Something for which the government were fighting, turned out did not need! And people living there even more...

Hi @terrycraft
I found your article interesting. It might be becauseI love history and Russian history is not well known to me. Living in South Africa and growing up during the Cold War, Russia was always that far away "evil" we kept away from.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello @krabgat

Thanks for reading! I will try to provide something else interesting from the history of the city!

Looking forward to it :)
