The next little ice age Vol. 22
The magnetosphere.

August 17-2017

Good morning, afternoon, night depending on where the reader is. We start with the sunspots as always. The Sunspot group 2671 has evolved its magnetic field in such a way that it now has potential to launch X-class solar flares. So we must be attentive the next few days as it will be geo-effective in hours.

We continue our daily review of Solar activity with the coronal hole. The huge coronal hole of the northern hemisphere that has been sending solar wind fast in the last days is provoking the first geomagnetic storms of the week.

This is the current state of our magnetoesphere. Although there are no severe alterations in the lines of the field, the truth is that we are in the middle of a storm.

-Small explanation of the reading of the graph:
In this graph the Sun is on the right the earth is the two-colored sphere (white and black) the dotted line is the orbit of the satellites that perform the readings. The solar wind arrives from the right pushing the lines of the magnetic field towards behind. If the lines are black the particles of the solar wind are pushed back and if they are red it is because the solar wind pushes them and collide. When they collide with each other, they close the circuit and discharge to the earth. They produce light phenomena in the upper layers of the atmosphere (auroras boreales)

-Summary : Space weather conditions are as follows. The solar wind is at 530km / sec and the density of protons is 12 protons per cubic centimeter. Current conditions are G-1 geomagnetic storm.

-Conspiracy?

Allow me to speak today of the magnetosphere.
-The terrestrial magnetoesphere is our natural shield that protects us from the solar wind. We can say in broad strokes that it is a very powerful magnetic field generated by the enormous amount of molten metals turning in the interior of the Earth.

The high energy charged particles from the Sun impact against that shield formed the Van Allen belts. The lines of the magnetic field are connected to the upper layers of the atmosphere in the polar regions. When these field lines collide with each other, the circuit is closed as if it were a light switch in your home. Discharging huge amounts of energy that in turn ionize the gases of those layers causing luminous phenomena known as Auroras. Although we are always talking about Auroras Boreales, there are also Austral Auroras, but given the depopulation of the South Earth pole does not many people have had the pleasure to observe them. The phenomenon of ionization is the same that we have used for neon light or flat screens that we all have at home.

The magnetosphere plays an important role for life on Earth. The magnetosphere protects our atmosphere from the solar winds, and other solar phenomena much more aggressive. CME's, EMP's and solar flares. Without this magnetic shield there would never have been atmosphere or water in its liquid and gaseous states.

Precisely the findings that we have made thanks to the probes we have sent to Mars show us that at some point in the past Mars had a magnetosphere sufficient to withstand liquid water on its surface.

Possibly these findings make us wonder in a disturbing way. If Mars had magnetosphere in the past that made it disappear? Would it have magnetosphere long enough to harbor life? Smart life? Could the same thing happen on Earth? Many questions are solved at every discovery but even more questions appear on the horizon.

We must point out that it is not unique to the earth since we have been able to check inside our solar system that there are more planets that have magnetosphere.
The planets that if they have magnetic field and in fact we can check it optically since we can observe the same luminous phenomenon that on Earth are Mercury, Jupiter, Satur, Uranus and Neptune.

But…
What do you think?
All opinions are important to me.

** I would like to make it clear that this series of articles is not intended to be a scientific document. It is a blog about the daily Solar activity and its possible effects for us humans. Since the Solar activity can have a great impact in different aspects of our life (changes in the climate, increase of the vulcanology and the seismicity, the UV radiation and damage the electrical systems and of telecommunications)
