Church Visit in Argao, Cebu (Philippines)

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

My country, the Philippines, is known as one of the predominantly Roman Catholic countries in the world. Most of the people in my country are Catholics, though there are also other religions which Filipinos embrace.

I am a Catholic by religion, but to be honest I'm not that religious. (sorry) I believe in my own faith and my God.

So much for that, I am sharing some pictures of a really wonderful place in Cebu. It's called Argao. :) It's in a way very historical because the plaza/park is preserved in its own way, too.

^ Above is a picture I took of the church when I and my parents went there to visit. :)

^ These are some important dates about the history of this church. Here's a translation of the very important dates:

  • 1788 -> The first church was built
  • 1876 -> It was destroyed by a typhoon
  • 1904 -> It was fixed.
  • 1987-1988 -> It was renovated for its 200th anniversary
  • 2013 -> It was destroyed by an earthquake
  • 2016 -> It was again fixed.

^ This is how it looks like inside the church.

^ This one is a government building in Argao. There is really a historical feel to it because it resembles or shall I say, it's still the same as how the buildings in the past looked like. The smaller one near the tree, is their Tourism office. :)

^ I'm proud to present you our Philippine flag and our National hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

^ And yes, the church is just a few steps away from the beach! :)

According to some tour guide I met in the past, the reason why most old churches in the Philippines are near the beach is because the "belfry or bell tower" of the church serves as a lookout. So, when someone see some invaders coming to the shore, it can easily warn the people by ringing the bell on the church.

So, there you have it!
The beautiful ARGAO! :)
