The Boy Scout motto is, "Be Prepared." Be prepared for what? And how long should I prepare for? These have been questions I have been asking myself lately. The whole prepping thing has sounded a little weird to me. I always pictured some crazy dude(picture above) barricaded in his underground bunker trying to make contact with space aliens. Then I started researching about being prepared for an emergency. FEMA recommends 3 days worth of food and water to last most common emergencies. "Common emergencies?"

The average grocery store only carries a 3 day supply of food for that neighborhood. The 3 days of food that people assume are always available in the grocery store can be gone within hours when a population panics. I know every time the next Snowpocalypse is forecast the shelves are bare withing hours. Research has shown that the average American household has less than a week’s supply of food on hand.

How much is enough? Where do you start? When do you stop? Will it be enough for a week, a month, or a year?

Well, this Boy Scout has started down the prepping path. We began to stock up on food. Rice, noodles, and oats were easy items to begin with. We redesigned our pantry with can rotation. The pantry is now more organized. Are we prepared for a SHTF scenario? Probably not, but we are better off for those "common emergencies"? Yes.

most people start out as survivalists then transition to preppers then wind up homesteaders so just have fun and prep on ! ! !

That is so true! Hence why our #homesteadersonline community includes all of the above that you mentioned; we have all been one or the other, or a combination

Well we are looking hard at making the move to homesteading.

its not that hard of a move i think. it is just learning how to do things yourself other than buying your supplies/prep. its fun. im 4yrs into homesteading now. best advice i can give is get good at composting ;)

Thanks for the advice. My wife and I have already said that will be one of the first things we need to start is a compost pile.

helps grow food naturally and saves a TON of money...

Prepping is a pretty sweet idea, and does pretty much go hand in hand with homesteading. Homesteading is a matter of sustainability. I find that I am not so much thinking about SHTF (Matt. 6) but more just planning for tomorrow...if we wake up again! 😂🙃
