Opuntia is a genus of plants of the family Cactus. Opuntia belong to desert cacti. These cacti are the most unpretentious and tenacious of all. In nature, the prickly pear is 4.5 m high. The fruits of the prickly pear ripen from mid-July to mid-August. The fruits of many kinds of prickly pears are edible, they are known as "Indian figs".
The fruits of the prickly pear are fleshy, juicy, rather large (up to 5-7.5 cm in length, sometimes up to 10 cm, and weighing 70-300 g), containing 13-14% sugar.
