A strong earthquake shakes Mexico.
A new tremor shook the Mexican capital this Friday shortly before six o'clock in the afternoon (local time). Five months after the September 19 earthquake that left more than 300 dead just in the capital, the city moved back and forth for several seconds. According to the seismological service, the quake had an intensity of 7 and the epicenter was located a few kilometers from Pinotepa Nacional, on the Oaxacan Pacific coast, about 600 kilometers south of Mexico City. The tremor have also felt strongly in the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Puebla. At the moment, it is unknown if there are victims.
A new earthquake, this time of magnitude 5.9, once again shook central and southern Mexico just one hour after the first one, reported the National Seismological Service (SSN).
The first tremor caused scenes of panic in different neighborhoods of the capital. In the Roma and La Condesa neighborhoods, where most hit the 19-S, the population took to the streets immediately. The main concern is that some of the damaged buildings may collapse in the face of fear that they could collapse. The seismic alert sounded a few seconds before the earth moved and shortly after the helicopters began to fly over the city. "What a fright I have gone through, I thought it was going to be like a few months ago but it has been less time" explains Guadalupe Naranjo at Colonia Roma. I'm scared of buildings like that, he says, pointing to a mole abandoned for five months because of damage to the structure and that wobbled together on Friday afternoon.
In colonies such as Polanco, Carmen Rioja, she acknowledges that she "got stuck", crushed by panic, and had to help her down the stairs of her home. "I have been paralyzed. Not know what to do. I still have the fear in the body of the last earthquake, "he explains.
In the Zocalo or Colonia del Valle the scenes were repeated and hundreds of people took to the streets with panic on their faces. "I had never experienced something like that before. Everything was moving around me, "explains Julie O'connor, an Irish tourist who is still barefoot because of the speed with which she left the room in which she lives.
The tremor has frightened the neighbors of Multifamily Tlalpan, in the south of the city. With 10 buildings, the complex was one of the most affected by the earthquake on September 19. One fell and several ended with serious structural damage. Nine people died.
This afternoon, at least 150 neighbors had gathered in assembly. After a long tug-of-war the city government was going to give them the final studies of property damage. They had just started, when the seismic alert began to sound. They were in the street, sitting on plastic chairs, while the moderator read the order of the day. At the sound of the alarm, everyone got up and gathered in the center of the road, less than 100 meters from the ruins of building 1-C, fallen in September.
Many embraced, others began to cry. Above their heads, the cables of light swayed, rehearsing a dance known to all, the dance of fear.
The helicopters began to fly over the area. Ambulance sirens were heard. While they recovered from the fright, many neighbors marked numbers on their phones, trying to know if family and friends in other parts of the city were fine. Others organized to check buildings for possible damage.
Fear of a repeat of the tragedy of September 19
In a first estimate, the Mexican National Seismological Service has reported that the tremor has had a magnitude of 7.0. Almost at the same time, the US Geological Survey has raised the intensity of the earthquake to 7.5 - although later it has reduced it to 7.2 - and has located the epicenter in the southwestern state of Oaxaca, the fifth largest in the country. Oaxaca is one of the most active geologically active zones in Mexico.
The earth has trembled again in Mexico less than six months after two devastating earthquakes killed hundreds of people in the center and south of the country. The first tremor, of 8.2 in intensity, occurred on September 7 of last year, when the earth roared and took away the life of 96 people, most of them in the state of Oaxaca. Two weeks later, on September 19, coinciding with the anniversary of the great earthquake of 1985 that killed 10,000 people, another earthquake, with more destructive capacity than the first, left thousands of people trapped under the rubble of buildings and a deadly balance of 369 dead.
After the seismic alert, all the protocols were activated and communication was established with the states in which the earthquake was perceived, indicated the Minister of the Interior (Interior) through his Twitter account.
Thats a big quake.
Stay safe my friend.
