I'm back... but this post is not an attack, merely my own views...

in #opinion5 years ago

I am back to steemit again after, what looks like a few years since my last post, and only came back after reading a post from @c0ff33a about steemit and his involvement with it. Maybe this is not the best time for me to do so, as my thinking at the moment has not been in the positive channels recently.

To be brutally honest, I had forgotten all about this site, and was more than amazed that I had kept all the password keys etc, so to finally get logged back in again felt like an achievement!!!

So, I'm back, and I'm looking at things, and.... I'm still taken aback a bit by the same sort of layout of things, that visually to me are still looking dated. Now, don't take this as an attack of any kind, but just a personal opinion on what I see when I try to log in for the first time and then set about checking on what interests me... and maybe that's the problem, I'm not quite doing it the right way!

I'm a techie, I like to read about certain types of tech, learn from others experiences, and usually that means a quick search on the likes of YouTube and I can find a massive amount of information to hand. And of course, the google search takes you on a journey that can be good and bad... but ultimately, you do tend to find things that are interesting.

On here, and on DTube it just seems to be an abundance of people promoting crypto, making money ideas and the likes, and a lot of padding as well, or am I just being over harsh and blind to what steemite is all about?

I realise that this post may seem harsh, and extremely negative, but it's actually the complete opposite! I'm looking for people who understand steemit way better than me, to guide and explain to me what it's all about, and possibly explain why it should be treated differently from YouTube and personal blog sites?

I think the slickness of other huge sites has me spoilt to a degree, and I'm spoon fed the way to do things, but I hope that you can understand that if I am seeing things in this light, what about other newbies who are looking for a platform to use?

Is steemit for everyone or is it for specific people? I'm interested on feedback about this!

Also... to end on a very positive note... I hope that each and every one of you have a goff New Year and that 2020 brings you good health, then wealth!

Right, now I'm not driving across half of the UK and have had time to digest this - my answers.

I agree about the layout, but that was why in post I gave examples of other front ends that supply the information differently. On a base level everything posted to the Steem Blockchain can be accessed through any sort of front end someone chooses to build through the api system - I think we will see more front ends grow and develop as the user base increases.

For finding content you are interested in, communities is currently in beta accessible at https://beta.steemit.com these will make it easier to find content to specific interests - and it will eventually be only posted to the community and not your own main blog. So you can major your blog on say photography, but make posts in communities about other interests like computers, smart home connected living, motors and motoring etc.

For video content @threespeak are making a massive move for onboarding video content creators, it is a paid subscription but offers numerous perks that offset the cost. Check out https://beta.steemit.com/trending/hive-100421 and https://3speak.online/user/threespeak

I agree with you wholeheartedly on the layout issue! I love the concept behind Steemit, and I do believe that there are TONS of interesting writers, artists, photographers, and bloggers on this platform. The problem I see is the difficulty in finding them!

The search function sucks. I have a difficult time finding my own previous posts. It should be a simple keyword search, but that usually turns up a bunch of random stuff with 10 items per page. It's impossible to comb through. I end up endlessly scrolling down the page through 3 years of posts (which takes a while on my high speedHughesNet connection) and then hitting 'command+f'.

The only way to find content that I want to see is if I am already following the author. Otherwise, you are stuck scrolling through the 'Trending' and 'New' categories. I think the reason all of the crypto posts are so visible on the site is because many of the early adopters were into crypto, and they are now the whales who steer this front end of the ship.

Like I said, I love the concept of Steem, and I am confident that Steemit will eventually get the optics right OR someone else will develop a better front end for the blogging/social media aspects of the blockchain. Regardless, I personally feel like I have found my little niche here, and the homestead community is pretty awesome! I think I've found my digital home here on the Steem blockchain... even it is a bit tough to navigate.

I'm not all too sure on how things will be different when smt's and communities become effective but I think from what I've read it could bring solutions to some of your critique.

I do not recall ever meeting you, but then I am not into tech stuff. However, reading this post makes me feel I want to say, "Welcome back." as you sound honest and curious.

A lot has changed, but if I explain it my way, many will complain I am being biased and so on...but I hope you keep your eyes open, read a few posts by those who disagree with those in power (easy to find, you'll see most of such posts are either greyed out because of paid-for vigilantism (flagging is now subsidised) or else, as with this comment, Payment Declined.

Somebody reads my posts! I knew someone would eventually lol

I've read the whole internet, and all that was left was your stuff! :)
