Koutoubia Marrakech, Morocco

Koutoubia is one of the most visited buildings in #Marrakech and the most representative of Almohad art of the city, is prohibited entry to any person who NOSEA Muslim. This place is close to the busy square Jemma el Fna and bustling souks. It was built in the twelfth century during the reign of Sultan Abd al-Mumin belonging to the Almohad dynasty soon settled around manuscripts by numerous merchants which took Mosque #Koutoubia name which means (mosque of the booksellers) ( kutub: Book in Arabic). It has 12.8 m on a side and 77 meters high, the minaret is decorated differently on each side, combining floral motifs and epigraphs with embossed interlocking sandwiching paintings, tiles bands or arches. At the top of the minaret topped four overlapping and golden balls of decreasing size, the largest diameter of 2m. Legend mind that once these balls were 3 representing the worlds terrestrial and celestial espiritual.La fourth ball would have been a donation of one of the wives of Sultan Yaqub el-Mansur who would cast their gold jewelry to do it as penance for breaking Ramadan fasting eating three grapes. For his aquitectura and sobriety in the decoration, the Koutoubia has been taken as a reference for construciion Hassan Tower in Rabat and the #Giralda in #Seville
