VR Rollerskates Coming to a Store Near You!

in #vr9 years ago

The world of VR will be a wild one with new worlds and landscapes to explore, experiences one could never afford suddenly being possible and even a new potentiality for social dynamic transformation. First dates occuring at virtual cafes. To be prepared for this new reality, former Mythbuster Jamie Hyneman is looking for US$50,000 which will enable him to engineer a prototype pair of roller skates to wear in virtual reality.

Hyneman's pitch video points out that when one straps on goggles and gloves to enter virtual reality, your eyes are occupied and you therefore run the risk of bumping into stuff if you try to walk in meatspace while simulating walking in a virtual world. And bumping into stuff is dangerous.

Walking in VR requires walking in the real world as well. Although your eyes are seeing one thing the rest of your body including your legs and feet are forced to experience something much different. Without having a real example of this in front of me, I can only partially imagine the need for these pilot rollerskates but theoretically they do seem quite important.

Previous attempts to sort this out have involved harnesses or slippery surfaces, but Hyneman and his collaborators now think “Vortrex Shoes” are a better answer.

Its uncertain whether the 'Vortex Shoes' will be able to solve the problem but as VR continues to improve at a rapidly accelerating rate, best to have the right pair of kicks on hand so we can truly enjoy the ride!

What do you guys think about these prototype VR shoes? Do you think they'll be a hit or fade into obscurity as the technology further comes into fruition?

Thanks for reading!

Interesting idea :)

I don't know that they'll be on my Christmas list; however, they are pretty cool.

the last time I tried roller blading, I almost killed myself when I couldn't stop going down hill. I had to bail out into the grass where my tumbling body was covered in grass an mud.

My pride was injured more than my body.

I sold my roller-blades. :)

The nice thing about this development is that even the elderly can use them. As a matter of fact, I can imagine it could become the way for the elderly to take a long walk, in the countryside for instance, while remaining safely at home.

There you are, I bet you thought this would only be of use to the young?

I think the whole VR industry is starting out pretty slowly for gaming. Not enough interest in it yet. Not enough people already owning and playing with it. The equipment is expensive, faulty, heavy, and wires get in the way when you turn!

Hopefully we will see some better products in the future, but for these skates...

Looks like a great idea, but like the rest before, it's either not going to work right, or cost a ridiculous amount until cheaper production can happen.

I remember seeing an episode of Shark Tank with an inventor pitching his VR gaming rig years ago. It was the ultimate setup using a lot of the tech from these shoes, like an accelerometer and force sensors. It was like a gyro surrounding you with a treadmill underneath that went in any direction allowing you to turn and run without actually moving your location.

I'm excited about the future of gaming. I've been playing all kinds since nintendo in '89. I don't think the gaming industry and the VR space are synced up yet to deliver great content because of the money. The porn industry does have it, and it's taken the lead for use of VR, and already making tons of money off VR porn.

thanks for share.
