Let's move!

As an English teacher, it is my main mission to keep my students entertained in my lessons so that they can feel eager to learn something. Today, I would like to share some of the thing that I do in my classes by myself. First of all, nobody likes passive and quiet lessons. I don't mean to turn your classroom into a music club, but movement and action are always needed for an effective lesson.

You may ask how you can achieve this. Well, it is not a hard task indeed. If you are especially a young teacher, you surely have lots of energy. In order to keep your student awaken during the whole session, try to move in class as much as possible. When you start moving around, your students will all the time keep their eyes on you. In the end, they will be able to learn what you are teaching in classroom.

The shape of classroom!

Your attitude is also very important. If you are a person whose tone of voice never changes, your student will easily feel tired of you. I make sure to be as funny as possible to keep my students' attention on me. It is needed for both students and teacher. Is it possible to teach in a classroom without making any jokes and laughing? Don't forget that we are all people and we need to be relaxed from time to time.

As an English teacher who is working in private school, I pay attention to the atmosphere in classrooms. In order to engage all students in activities, we have the classroom in U-shape as you can see in the image above. By doing this, we make sure to face all students with each other. In my opinion, it is the best shape of classroom as it allows everyone to look at each other and keep eye contact with teachers.

Make it more colorful!

If you are a teacher who is always staring at the board and too busy with writing, setting the rules on it, I am sorry to say that you are not a good teacher. Especially when we consider English teaching, less writing and more speaking are more useful for your students. Try to be away off traditional techniques as much as possible. Writing rules on the board doesn't work anymore.

Personally, I just write some tips on the board which can answer my students' questions. Instead of drowning into rules, it is better to show the more materials such as videos or dialogues. While doing these activities, it is important to limit your speaking time and give your students much more time to express themselves. When your students are able to say what they want, they will feel more comfortable in your classroom.

Feedback

Being too dominant in classroom is not something teachers and students prefer. When you act like you are superior all over your students, they may not have the feeling of trust towards you. It is a good idea to ask your students for feedback from time to time. I don't mean to say that you should check their opinion or warnings out in every possible case. However, it is important to let them say what they want.

When you don't give your students chance to tell you how they feel in classroom, you might easily miss some important points and this might affect your performance in classroom a lot. Personally, I ask my student at the end of the class if they feel uncomfortable with anything in my teaching. When they have misunderstandings about me and my teaching skills, I comfort them by giving logical answers.

Education

The communication between students and teachers is really crucial. When you are not able to build up trust with your students, you are likely to fail. Before teaching them anything you want, you firstly need to gain their trust.
