Learning through activities / Future plans!
Future plans!
As we all know, learning can be achieved more effectively through direct experiences, I usually prefer to conduct my lessons through some materials in our hands which are related to listening, speaking or reading. When you just draw some charts or write all the rules on the board, your students never understand what you are trying to achieve in your explanations.
Today, I would like to give you some ideas about teaching phrases in relation to future plans. There are lots of ways to express our plans, ambitions and hopes. In this example lesson, I would like to show you how your students can learn to express themselves with some useful phrases. In this example lesson, I am going to conduct the lesson through a reading text written by me!
Warm up!
When our subject is about future plans, it is essential to start a conversation about their future plans. When you direct question related to their plans, it is possible to get answers and phrases from your students which you are already planning to teach. After a short warm up activity, you may ask your students to read the text below and answer what the person mentioned in the reading is planning to do.
My summer plans!
Mike is quite busy with school. When the summer time comes closer, he has already got lots of plans in his mind. He is going to stay in their summer house in Barcelona. He would like to meet lots of new people so that he can practice his Spanish. He would like to try lots of different dishes. There are some people whom he is planning to meet. He is looking forward to meeting them as soon as possible!
What are his plans?
At this point, you should ask your students what plans Mike has got to see how much they have understood from the text. When the answer the questions, they will actually automatically use what is taught to them in the reading. In addition to writing a paragraph about the answer. you may also ask them to complete the phrases below.
Complete the following phrases with Verb+ing or Verb infinitive! After setting the rules, give one example by using each phrase listed below.
- be planning to +
- be looking forward to +
- want to +
- would like to +
- be going to +
Practice!
There are some possible ways to practice the phrases about future plans. You may either ask your student to write a dialogue supported with some follow-up questions. They usually love it as they can write about everything the want without having any limitation. It is also fires them to be more creative in their products. This is not the only option, though.
It is also a good idea to ask your students to write some questions down. When they are done with their questions, you can easily form a chain with your students and lead them to ask questions to each other. By doing this, they are given opportunities to use the phrases about future tense. The last option that I can recommend is to write a paragraph about their future plans using the phrases you have taught them.
