Articles!

As all experienced teachers know, English can be learned through activities effectively. It is not important how many grammar rules you write on the board. What is more important is to make things clear for your students to help them understand how things are working in the language. When the issue is teaching English, there are some ways of doing this. Today, I would like to show you an example of teaching articles in English.

Articles in English are " a, an and the". Students usually feel surprised when they see these articles in a reading. It may be easier to understand and use a / an, but "the" always seems more complicated for them. The best way of teaching it through a reading as it is possible to see how they are used in a text. By doing this, your students can understand how they function in English.

Reading!

It is important to show them a text where they can see how these articles are used. I usually try to be careful with my choices to make sure that all examples are clear in passages. For this post, I would like to write a short paragraph that you may also use in your lessons or feel inspired by it. Before writing the text, it is always important to have small talks about the text as a warm-up activity. For the following post, you may start a conversation about parties.

Last College Party!

I went to /a/ college party last night. /The/ party was in a club. /The/ club was very big and there was /an/ incredible atmosphere inside /the/ club. When /the/ party was going on, a problem happened. The internet made /an/ error. After all, I can say that it has been /the/ best party since I moved in /the/ USA.

Set the rules!

This was the lesson we had in my class today. Therefore, the photo that you can see above was taken by me during the lesson to show you how I usually do it with my students. When students are done with reading, they are actually pretty much done with the activity along with questions to check their comprehension skills.

Writing the rules on the board without brainstorming is not a good idea. When we are done with reading, you may ask your students why you use a, an and the in the reading. When you help them with identifying the functions of them, they will easily understand how things are working. In my own experience, reading is always the biggest helper of teachers. It really works well in this grammar.

Practise

When your students are done wit clarifying rules about the articles, it is time to see if they can really apply the rules on a text. The best way of checking it in my opinion is to ask them fill in gaps in an activity. In order to make this happen, I would like to write a short paragraph in which there are some missing articles.

Teaching requires creativity and diversity. As long as your lesson are interesting and well-prepared, your students will be so eager to learn the language. I hope, this example of lesson will help you to plan your lesson more effectively.
