Music education

As I stated in my post yesterday , I am a professional teacher who has also worked as a volunteer in Slovenia for 1 year. In my account, I am trying to tell my experiences and encourage people to do same thing. In addition to these two main things, one of my biggest aims is to share my experiences with people who would like to improve themselves in their teaching career. Teaching doesn't happen only in schools, you can teach people anything in every possible chance you get in life. If you would like to see my latest photo, you are welcome to check the link out.

Creating Awareness And Introducing New Cultures To Children And Youngsters!

In the center that I used to work a few years ago, I was supposed to organize some workshops to educate our children, teenagers and youngsters. When we think about education, music has got a crucial part in teaching. Music is not only listening to some popular songs or watching tv. If you want your students to get the feeling of it, educators should create opportunities which give access to children to experience it.

Drums

In our music workshop, I decided to invite an artist from Ljubljana which is the capital city of Slovenia. We promoted the activity before our volunteer artist arrived at our center. It was all about volunteering to teach students who are not able to go to music course or concerts. When we told them about the workshop, they were pretty excited to try it as they would have a chance to experience it by themselves.

We made it thanks to our volunteer. He brought some drums for our students. Especially, younger students were really excited about it. Some of them were 8 or 9 years old, so it was completely something new for them. Before starting to experience this special feeling, our volunteer and I informed our students why we planned to have this activity. As our volunteer planned to show the origins of this activity, he gave some background information, telling them how this African drum music was born.

Learning patterns

Playing an African drum is not an easy task. We put our students in groups and told them to listen to our volunteer carefully. When he started giving instructions how to play the instrument, they were always very excited and patient to start playing that. As they knew that they can't play without learning the rules, they listened to our instructor very carefully. When you get your students' attention on something, they always act as ideal students.

In playing an African drum, it is essential to learn the patterns to form melodies. After a few testings, they finally got the idea. We were all very patient in teaching them how to play the drums. As I stated before, some of our children were just 8 or 9 year olds, so it might a bit hard to teach something complicated to your students, teachers and all educators must always be patient. Teaching is not an easy task.

Education and culture

When teaching something, it is important to bring some different elements together. When our students learned to play an African drum, they didn't only learn how to play an instrument. They got lots of things about African culture, African music and the origins of this music. Slovenia is a small nation where only about 2 million people live. Since these children don't have access to go to other countries much, they don't have many chances to get it.

One of my first aims in my volunteering and teaching project was to create awareness among these needy students. I have done it in different ways and music has been a part of it. After playing the drums for a while, we decided to have a quiz about our activities as we did in other workshops. We were very pleased with feedback we got from our students. They learned something new and useful that day, expanding their awareness.

Kids always enjoy doing different things and playing drums is certainly something people don't do everyday.

I have actually never played with a drum, not once, but I would love to try it one day.

They loved it a lot! :)

kids love to explore and its more important that we should guide them along the way

I totally agree :)

Great article today, congratulations! Music is a fundamental element in this first stage of the educational system. The child begins to express himself in another way and is able to actively integrate into society, because music helps him achieve autonomy in his usual activities, take care of himself and the environment, and expand their world of relationships. And the benefits of children's music are countless. Thank you for your wisdom and may God continue to bless you.

Greetings.

Thank you so much for your nice words, @saracampero
