A Power With Purpose(Bread from Heaven)
THE COMPASSION AND THE INITIATIVE OF JESUS (VV 32-34)
The impact made by the miracles of Jesus was evident (Matthew 14: 29-31); the people had been with him already for three days. The people remained with him because of his supernatural power and teachings, naturally they would be hungry and tired. The initiative of Jesus enlightens us with the truth that it is God who provides, heals, saves and restores. The sensitivity of Jesus led him to sympathize with the practical needs of the people without losing focus of his mission. On the contrary, the disciples worried about the apparent incapacity due to the lack of resources (v. 33). But Jesus answered his question with another question, "How many loaves do you have?" There is nothing impossible for God, if we put as much or as little as we have in his hands, he will multiply it to fulfill his divine purpose through our lives. The disciples looked at how little they had (seven loaves and a few small fish), but Jesus would teach them to have compassion for others and to trust in the power of God.
PREPARATION FOR THE MISSION (VV 35-36)
Jesus commanded the people to lie down on the earth; This was not an act of surrender, but an absolute confidence in the power of God. Jesus demonstrated the security with which a child of God acts when faced with limited circumstances. [2] In the same way that the Lord gave thanks for the food of a child in Matthew 14, Jesus gave thanks for the loaves and fishes and broke them. Instantly the miracle began, but Jesus did not work alone, but delegated and commissioned his disciples to bring food to the crowd. With perspective of the great commission that the disciples would receive (Matthew 28: 16-20), the Rabbi continued to teach without officially summoning his students. Jesus gave a great lesson: God is no respecter of persons, His power is unlimited, His disciples have been commissioned to take bread to the crowds.
A SATISFIED MULTITUDE (VV.37-39)
Jesus did not simply perform another miracle, but he showed compassion and his power also before the multitude of the Gentiles. His kingdom was being established, and his disciples were understanding the magnitude and purpose of the Messiah's mission. The result of Jesus' miracle was amazing: everyone ate and was satisfied! The disciples collected seven full baskets that were left over and Matthew specified that four thousand were fed not including women or children. After this surprising fact, Jesus and his disciples continued their journey in Gentile regions.
God has given us a great commission and although we sometimes feel limited and with limited resources, we have to trust in God and in his power. God prepared us for the mission, empowered us through the Holy Spirit and equips us through his word. Let us bring bread to all the hungry, without accepting people believing that the Lord is the one who satisfies and fills the heart of man.
