Zuckerberg Flailing To Save A Sinking Ship: Steemit Quiet????

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

We best hope this situation with Facebook and Zuckerberg goes on a while.

Over the last week, since news came out about the major security leak and how extensive the surveillance is at that company, you would think STEEM is in prime position to take advantage of it.

People are starting to not only question Facebook, but flee it. Reports are Elon Musk closed down the Tesla and SpaceX Facebook pages. There are campaigns to #deletefacebook. We even see articles calling for blockchain to answer this by providing decentralized social networking (hello?).

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

Get a look at this chart done by @arcange.

Since this fiasco for Zuckerberg started, the number of sign ups for STEEM is minimal. The trend mirrors what took place in the past. The usual is one big sign up day followed by decreasing numbers until we hit a few days where they are almost non-existent.

We are now at the point where the sign ups for yesterday are so small I cannot even make out the number.

Were there even any new people who signed up?

I know there are things being done to try to automate the process. In a video that was posted a number of weeks back, it was said that we should start seeing a difference in about 2-4 weeks. Without going back through my posts, we have to be closing in on the 4 week time frame.

To me, this is one of the biggest challenges to the growth of STEEM at the moment. As much as I love SMTs and the community ideas, I can wait a bit on them. There is enough marketing and word of mouth to make this place grow. However, we need to be able to get people signed up in an efficient manner. Failure to do so will see a continued increase in the inactive accounts since it takes a week or more to get approval.

That said, I know Steemit is not designed to go after Facebook. Even the name gives away where the focus is. Reddit is the target that is aimed at. I can't say that is a bad idea since that site has 250M users while being mostly a linking site. Steemit has a ton more to offer than that.

Nevertheless, when someone like Zuckerberg is flailing in the ocean, do not throw him a lifeline. It is time to take all those upset people and try to convert them to this blockchain. Even 100K from Facebook would really help this blockchain.

Personally, I think the screw ups by the traditional social media companies is going to keep coming to light. Facebook was not the only one engaging in this behavior. I do not believe it is a matter of "if" but, rather "when" another company gets caught with its hand in the cookie jar...Google anyone?

Let's us hope that some of the technical issues we are facing on here are worked out. This will put STEEM in prime position to take advnatage.

I have to say that those new-user registration figures are pretty bad, given what's happening at Facebook. We should be seeing a ton of new signups!

I believe the current manual review system is hurting many legitimate newbies, while the bots are still getting through.

The chart does not exactly get one excited does it @techwizardry.

I understand how hard it is to alter the system and still ensure there arent a ton of automated attacks signing up thousands of accounts. Verification is crucial.

That said, I agree with you...it does seem the bot are getting through...although that might be people on here going through blocktrades or something to set up new accounts.

The bots pay that's why, new users need to be vouched for in a way, it's definitely a risk of locking up steem and name sitting. People could post signup links to Anonsteem and the eos one, stinc is failing badly at keeping a 1997 website updated.

I don't think the bot signs itself up. The people who write the bots probably sign up for a steemit account, then when it gets approved they launch the bot code or whatever.

This does play right into the hands of the STEEM blockchain. We need to be able to cash in on news like this. People are getting upset and either directly or indirectly looking for something better. We need to play an active role in getting the word out. Thanks for the post. Resteem

Not so long ago friends and family thought I was paranoid for not including my real information on Facebook. Now they are all paranoid watching the news haha. I believe Social Media should run on blockchains and be cryptographically secure. Oh wait we already have that! Welcome to the future here, now! regards Task

You saw through the bullshit👍

That would be insane to imagine Steemit becomes the next Facebook. Getting me all excited here. Thanks. lol.

I have to wonder if there is a queue of people waiting to get in and then they register a bunch of people and it gets backlogged again. (its possible the new accounts even created are from Steem Connect) My friend tried to sign up and hadnt received anything to complete his account 45 days later. I finally made him an account through Steem Connect and delegated him some of my steem power but he hasnt even logged in yet. I think he lost interest. I agree that I can wait for the SMTs...we need changes on Steemit first. If Steemit is supposed to be the shining example of how SMTs can work they need to work on it first. (I dont mean to sound negative at all, I really do love Steemit)

I have seen this with folks too!

Quitting facebook was the best decision I ever made.

Who needs facebook when you have Steemit? :D

This is a sentiment I have seen expressed more than one time on here.

Facebook aka spybook can go to hell.

That’s almost exactly what I’ve been saying to people.

Facebook once lost a credit card number which I only used for FB advertising that was subsequently used by a hacker at beachbody.com so I know that their servers aren't secure. I had to revoke the card and since then have never used FB to advertise again.

Centralized databases are inherently insecure. For those who don't understand why, this video by Andreas Antonopoulos makes it perfectly clear:

The number of hacks all over the world is nothing short of amazing (well it isnt since we know they arent secure but the fact people arent aware of it is).

Even the banksters, they have been hacked. Yet people carry on like it is nothing.

That is why I think promoting the idea of decentralization is something that should be front and center. There is another way and we need to show people.

Regardless of how long it takes, the writing is on the wall. Decentralized will take over if for no other reason than the hackers will keep hacking. We can be certain there will be some big news stories over the next couple of years.

Nevertheless, when someone like Zuckerberg is flailing in the ocean, do not throw him a lifeline.

Let's show him some compassion. He's human after all. I think attention must shift towards decentralization and ensuring that more power is dispersed to the people and content creators and consumers on Facebook.

It is time to take all those upset people and try to convert them to this blockchain. Even 100K from Facebook would really help this blockchain.

How do we go about getting this done?

**Personally, I think the screw ups by the traditional social media companies is going to keep coming to light. Facebook was not the only one engaging in this behavior. **

This is my biggest concern. How many other major mainstream social media engagements in unwholesome stealing and manhandling of data? We may never get to know.

Hi @idowu-kunlere

Let's show him some compassion.

You are not serious with this comment?

A Pennsylvania man has been charged in the hacking of Apple and Google accounts belonging to more than 100 people, many of them celebrities, officials said on Tuesday.

Yet Mark who sold millions of peoples personal information will probably get off with no jail time!

If he had to receive a sentence by comparing the two cases, withholding a rope would be mercy to the bastard!

Instant verified sign ups, communities and a good mobile app will change things.

I still have my Facebook profile but have not been uploading anything there. I most still comment on some friends because they have refused to transition yet to Steem hehe.

Word of mouth is great and we are nearing that 1 Million mark even if it seems that Steem Inc marketing team is sleeping.

We have to fix the sign ups, the way some people are supported because I have seen so many talented people get put off by the lack of attention and rewards. I know we tell them it takes time and engagement effort and they are willing to do that but sometimes you have done everything but still nothing is panning out.
