Wait your turn

in #thoughts7 years ago

When I was a kid I was always taught to wait my turn, not that it took much of an effort as I have never been the cut the line kind of person. My daughter is much the same but I wonder if it is because one of the first phrases she learned was, "be patient".

She is very polite, very patient and will allow others the space to take their turn, even if it is her turn. I wonder if I have set her up for a lifetime of waiting for her opportunity, or the patience will mean that she is able to see the big picture and invest long.

I hope the latter of course.

Patience is one of those things that we think people should have, but rarely exercise ourselves and this is highly pronounced in the cryptosphere. Everyone know to invest long but nearly everyone continually sells earlier than they think they should have in hindsight. At least sometimes.

I wonder though that if one believes that the future of Blockchain and digital currencies are so bright, what is the rush? Of course there are people who choose our try to live off crypto earnings but it seems everyone is in a hurry to unburden themselves. I'd there some psychological reason for this behaviour?

Well it is probably tied to risk aversion as the longer something is kept, the more exposure to risk it receives. Maybe it comes from our past inability to store anything we considered highly valuable which mostly centered around food. I dunno but long holds are seemingly not what we are made for.

It is interesting to think that we have likely all heard the saying, "patience is a virtue" yet most of us err on the side of impatience or, procrastination. Laziness is not the same as patience, as the work for the result has to be done before the result from waiting is possible. Also, there can be a great deal many other things done while waiting.

These days people get bored if they have nothing to do and the go to process is to stare at a screen for distraction. For me, when I have "nothing" to do, I turn to Steem because I am able to actively wait for the future by participating in the present. Not many startup investments allow for the investor to actively keep using their value as they choose and even have a direct impact on the outcomes.

Most investors sit relatively silently with fingers crossed and their stake locked up and untouchable for years. Invest into Steem and you can use the stake to consume and even make significantly more earnings along the way. It is pretty cool.

I am outwardly patient for the most part while internally I am likely much like others, I would love some fast movement in a positive direction. You know, "are we there yet?" kind of stuff. But I also understand that things that happen too fast are also less stable, less firm.

For illustrative purposes, a pine tree harvested for wood in Australia is a soft wood, in Finland a hard wood. The difference in growth is the reason why with the Finnish trees taking over twice as long to be ready for harvesting. Which builds a better house? I don't know, but the Finnish one definitely makes better quality furniture.

How patient are you for the future to arrive? Maybe it also depends on what you expect that future to deliver. If you knew you were going to die in 3 years that would seem like a very short time yet, in a highly valuable crypto future - an eternity.

I hope at least my patience will benefit my daughter, just in case I screwed her over by teaching her not to push in front of others.

You do realise you have to "stare at a screen" for steem right XD

While you're teaching her not to push in, don't forget to teach her not to let others push in front of her :D

Think patience is one of those things advertisers/companies are frantically doing their absolute damnedest to crush out of people at all costs because patient people don't impulse buy much and run up debts.

Ye, i know - active Vs passive though

I am teaching her to take her turn as she tends to stand back, especially if the kids are big or loud.

Advertising is all about triggering action without thought.

Ahh I don’t blame her, took me a while to learn how to deal with loud people as well 😆 big is less of a problem 🙃

It is weird but the impatient ones have left the platform already. Patience is not fun but something everyone needs to learn. I think the older you become the easier it is. If you have an inkling that something will do well in the future surely you will wait and take a chance on that coming to fruition.I remember I was offered a package deal from a company one being a lump sum and the other was x amount for life. I chose the x amount for life as I worked out the lump sum was only 10 years of payments. A younger person would have taken the lump sum.

Steem is a big marshmallow test that many fail. They might of course do better in other areas by giving up on stern but I don't see the difficulty in spreading the risk and participating here too. I might take the lump sum now .. buy crypto :)

Good post.
I don’t know the answer to your final thoughts.
Patience is a virtue, sure some will cut in front of you while your waiting, but does their action cost you or save you? It depends on the situation of course and whether there is or isn’t any lost opportunity cost. I suspect that in most cases there is no cost.

While driving I frequently drive the speed limit and follow st a proper distance, which allows others to sometimes cut in front of me. I practice these habits to model safe driving for my children because I believe they do what you do, not what you say.
I also tell them the math of average speed driven, average small distance trips and no significant gain in time saved by speeding, but greatly increased gas consumption, reduced reaction time and increased risk of an accident.
Do they listen?
Do they model me?
Time will tell.
But I patiently continue, just like here on Steemit,
I patient continue to post, power up, buy more, invest more, learn more and wait.
Will I be rewarded?
Time will tell.
Take care,
Shortsegments

P.S.
Thanks for this chuckle;

When I started playing around with the mental arithmetic between locations, it changed my driving habits -gave me more patience. Now, the only time I speed is for fun ;D

I tihnk when it comes to opportunity, one has to have the sensitivity to understand the op costs and make a decision. Many push in front because of FOMO without recognizing there is more cost than opportunity.

Everyone who has tried to learn a difficult skill like playing an instrument knows the value of patience. Also everyone who tried to seize the opportunity knows the value of being impatient.

To be patiently impatient is a rare skill to develop.

Waiting for the right opportunity to jump into quickly is something I have never managed well. I hope this time it is different.

I have often thought that I have great patience but my family often reminds me that it is not really the case. However, these days patience is more rare to see in the world as the entitlement factor is absurd and real! I can’t imagine thinking these thoughts when I was growing up but today the internet and instant gratification has taken its toll on patience I believe.
