Orange through an ND8 filter

in #photography9 years ago

Over saturated? Perhaps. But this isn't done in post, it is shot through a Neutral density filter. ND filters modify the wavelengths of all light equally, hence the neutral. This is to stop overexposure. For example, the long-exposure shots of running water that have been taken during the day require filters or else the shots come out blown completely to white. A slow shutter speed can be used because the filters stops the light from processing on the film/sensor. An ND8 like I used here means that it only lets in 1/8th of the light.

This is not a great example for the use of the filter but I used it to get a more natural view of the sunset. Even though it is a little more orange than it was, it is more realistic than unfiltered. An ND4 and ND2 combined would have been more suitable probably but I was a little lazy.

The filters I have are the cheapest (and nastiest) screw on filters from ebay. They are plastic lenses (glass is much better) but I didn't know much when I bought them and wanted to experiment a little first. Two dollars or so from ebay for an experiment is much nicer than 80 per filter. They are not great as filters as they are not quite neutral but I do not use them often.

At some point I will add some better examples but NDs they are worth looking into for a play around. Also, an ND 2 or 4 is great to have on during sunny days as it gives more natural and vibrant colours to a shot. When travelling, I sometimes have an ND4 on my walkaround lens (12-40 2.8) so I should probably invest more into that.

Again, I am not a technical photographer, I am an experimental play-arounder so may not explain all of this adequately. There is plenty of information available from other sources though.

Does anyone get bored when I post a photo and then ramble about stuff?

Good photo and thanks for explaining the process

You are welcome. I found that to get into the technical stuff I had a bit of fear because of price of entry and it sounding well, too technical. Hopefully I can help people over that hurdle sometimes.

Nice photo. Id actually love to get an ND filter to take long exposures during the day. As it is now I'm relegated to night shots, which is fun, but it would be nice to have more options.

You should post some more shots with this filter :)

I will at some point but really, check out ebay for some cheap ones. Mine are screw caps so are lens specific so be sure to choose a suitable lens and get the right mm. Some were 99c some were 5 euros. I also bought my lens protectors from there as I am quite rough with my gear at times.

Yeah I really should do that. Dont really have much of a camera yet though...just a Sony A5000 that I'm borrowing and my gopros haha

Nice shot, I like ND filters. Just got a ND 10 recently and have yet to use it that much. It is indeed nice that you can shoot longer exposures with it during the day like for waterfalls and others... Allows for some creative uses.
