Looks matter, so stop lying
We have all heard someone say it and most have probably also repeated those words but, it isn't really true. People say it out of political correctness and fear of being judged for actually saying the truth which is;
Looks matter a great deal.
Have you ever walked down the street and seen a couple walking along together and said something like "They just don't match", Yes? Well, looks definitely matter to you and you have done what just about every human that has ever lived has likely done. Judged.
It is in our nature to evaluate potential partners and it is in our hard-wiring to seek out certain traits. A woman's hip size, a man's height, a woman's waist size or, a man's jaw line or hands. There are indicators all over our body that nature has decided is somehow indicative of successful mating.
However, we are also driven by nurture, how we are affected by our environment. This will of course include how we are raised and by whom, culture, media, advertising and social proofing. What is found attractive is likely more influenced by the we than the I but, we feel that it is us as the individual who makes the decision.
But, there is more to it than this also as even though we might have certain preferences, we are limited by our own looks and we know it. Most people have an innate ability to recognize who is in their 'league' and will generally seek partners in that category, even though they might choose higher on the looks ladder if they had free choice.
Now of course, looks aren't the only thing that matters but in general, it is the first thing that matters. It is a qualifier that piques the interest in the initial stages to see if it is worth pursuing.
Let me ask you this. If you find a person physically unappealing, do you still strike up a conversation to see if in actual fact they are your soulmate? Unlikely. The person that you are going to spend the rest of your life with can't physically disgust you, can they?
Well, that all depends on what you are willing to accept, what you are willing to compromise on to satisfy your own desires. And desire is a large part of our decision making process. We want certain things and therefore we will change our expectations, change our mental framing to accept things that we may not have accepted before. We will also include information that might have been excluded before.
A guy looking at a picture of a beautiful woman in a magazine may fantasize about meeting her in person but isn't likely to care much about her personality at that point. And women are much worse. Women will exclude a guy they see down the street as a potential because of his hairstyle or, he has a neck beard.
Although many people don't talk so openly about this, it isn't hard to recognize how important looks are too us if we are in closed situations with friends as people will feel comfortable enough to indicate their various preferences and looks always come into it. As a side note at this point, nearly all of my good friends IRL are women and they are comfortable talking in my presence. If they are holding back in those conversations because of me, well, women are much, much worse than men when it comes to talking about sex.
I say worse as a social judgement, not a personal one. There is some kind of generalization about the way men talk about women but it is taboo to say that women talk about men. I think it is part of the social programming and the fragility of male egos in comparison and female egos who want to seem more demure. Most men have inferiority complexes of some kind if compared to men they themselves might deem 'better' than them. I am no Brad Pitt after all.
I find it strange though that something as obvious as looks is socially programmed to be avoided in conversation and that could be because it is difficult to change. It is interesting how people want equality yet, they still want to have their sexual partner preference present. There is a bit of a conflict in that thinking isn't there? I want equality as long as I get what I want.
Looks do matter to us otherwise the advertisements of beautiful people wouldn't be necessary to sell the products. The whole idea is to associate the product with an ideal of who we want to be. Buy this deodorant, look a little more like that hot dude with the six pack surrounded by all those models.
People chose their cars, their houses, their phones, their clothes and any number of other material things based on their looks yet when it comes to admitting they do the same with their partners, that is the line they draw.
Again, it isn't that looks are the only thing and as everyone is aware, life happens, sixpacks get covered and looks fade and the hope is that by then, the looks don't matter and something much deeper than the skin has formed. However, pretending that they don't matter at all is nonsense and a lie to the self.
Funnily enough, even people born blind care about their looks and the looks of their partners. Even if they don't truly know what they or their partner looks like, they want to look good. I realized this long ago because I had a blind friend at school and it surprised me how important it was to her. She was more self-conscious about her looks than most girls I have known. For her she said it was because of the uncertainty and that she could never know what she presented to the world. She would also ask me what guys who talked to her looked like. She didn't need details, just a trusted opinion. Social proof.
I have never really been shy about saying that looks matter to me (perhaps obviously) but, it isn't an import factor, just the general first attraction point. But, looks can grow to be loved as personality and little quirks take over the hard-wiring and start to morph reality into acceptance. Beauty grows out of understanding and to understand, one has to search much deeper than with just the eyes.
I am definitely batting out of my average. I met my wife on the dance floor and it took me ages to get the courage to talk to her yet. She is gorgeous but, that is not what caused me to fall in love with her. It was the stupid things she did like being late to a date because she bought a bottle of water for a seagull that looked thirsty or, the way she would hold my hand while we danced.
It is all of these little things that influence our preferences that are so much more important than the looks for the long term view. It is also these little things that people often forget to attend to once they are comfortable which can lead to breakdowns in a relationship.
Looks are important but they are just one of the many factors that are important that we need to consider and as we start to understand more about the person we are with, even as the looks change, they are no longer a primary concern, no longer that important. It is not necessarily that our concept of what is beautiful has changed, just our desire to compromise more important aspects of to satisfy the needs of looks.
This is a some thoughts to create some thoughts and there are several parts and lines of thinking that I may investigate with much more detail later. but one thing I do recognize in myself is, I don't care what you think of my looks but, I do care what my wife thinks. If I am doing my job well as a partner, even as my looks change, her acceptance of me as a person will continue to grow.
Something a little different for 3 am tonight.
Goodnight

I wrote a post a while back about that phrase, “what is she doing with him! which essentially is a judgement made on looks alone. We live in a very materialistic and judgemental society and it’s a typical thought-process these days I think.
You are definitely punching above your weight here, as am I! Looks matter a great deal to me and Faith, always have...We want to look the best we can for each other but here’s the thing, between us looks are the least important thing. Love, respect, tolerance, humour, patience and a million other things come first.
These start at the first date but you still saw each other to set the time ;)
Or.. was it a blind date? I was very young :D
Met at the Royal Adelaide Show. Yes, true, we saw each other before the other things came through. I have no idea how the hell I pulled that little trick off but 31 years later she’s still putting up with me! :)
Maybe I used to be a super-handsome dude and became fuglier with age! :)
lol one thing that came to mind when reading this is how most of my guy friends keep judging women's breasts nonchalantly. Once when they were talking about some good friends of mine I got a bit triggered and told them that "well you know, that's one part of the body they can't really help, I'd still rather prefer natural ones over fake ones but in the end I'm way more into butts cause that's something everyone can work on, imagine if they sat around talking about your small dicksize" his reaction to that was priceless and then he went on to say something like "yeah well if they only like big ones they are sluts". I wanted to call him a slut as well but its kinda funny how quick that thinking changes. Same thing with the general thought of men who get laid a lot with different women are cool and awesome but if a woman were to do the same then she's a slut. What a world we live in.
There are a lot of double standards going on when it comes to this and most of it is just retard social conventions that people have decided upon. At the end of the day, everyone has their own preferences and shouldn't have to hide them. People just don't like to be judged.
Guys are so fragile when it comes to being compared to other guys. I think that is why some people are so into virgins. Personally, I'd choose good experience :)
Once upon a time, I was cool and awesome too....
I have always heard that love is blind, because there are couples more unequal than others and this is because when love arrives, differences are not seen. Whoever looks for someone without defects is for convenience. Now, if we talk about appearance, we have to deal with it at all times, since it is our letter of introduction to where it goes.
love is only blind because real love has no borders at all, it is unconditional. Romantic love however has human conditions placed on it which means, what is seen carries weight too.
That's right, friend @tarazth, in addition true love is patient, is kind, is not envious or presumptuous or proud, does not behave rudely, is not selfish, does not get angry easily, does not hold a grudge.
I’m the ugliest bastard on the face of the planet and still managed to find me a wife. She’s not blind though.
I believe it to be subconscious for sure. We may find or see someone that absolutely breath-taking, yet, when they start talking or do something that completely removes our expectation, it becomes a complete turn-off XD. It's hilarious!
Great post!

looks can put someone on a pedestal, actions can knock them off.
There is an objective standard of beauty, much as there are objective standards for intellect, athleticism, strength of will, social decorum, etc. Reality has requirements, despite the leftist drivel about the prominence of subjectivity. Only in the confused, modern, relative world would men conceptualize a universe without objective measures. The only universe where beauty become irrelevant in courtship is in the insipid Hollywood films, usually comedy because such concept is utterly ridiculous.
When it comes to physical standards, symmetry and balance are two that wold likely be fairly quantifiable given the right data. The human eye can pick up subtleties in expression like a slightly crooked smile, off-symmetry is relatively easy to see. Balance/proportion is also which is why athletic beauty is so common place as for the standard 'athlete' (non-specialized), their body is in overall balance without too much over or under in any specific area.
Here's the thing, the statement you question is not meant to be true, it is not an honest statement. It is one of those brain hack statements intended to jog you out of your usual mental routes to get to new ways of thinking. I believe this is similar to how lots of ancient wisdom is expressed, in very untrue ways on the face of it, but objective truth is not the purpose.
Here's a quote from a great book, Earth by David Brin (excerpt. The context is speaking to an old woman shaman, who also happens to be a modern woman with university education, and the shamanic guise is kind of a shtick.
When people take these things literally, that's on them. This kind of wisdom is esoteric, even though it seems everyday, because it does not come with a warning of how to use it. Those people who understand laugh cruelly at those to take it seriously. The rest are affected by it unconsciously.
Yes you are right and this is the issue. The statement alone isn't to blame, it is aphoristic, there is a lot of detail that it contains. The problem is that people use it as a defense or a signal without actually spending the time to understand the wisdom within. It becomes a common meme that no longer carries the message. Those that use it this way are lying to themselves at the very least.
Agreed.
Looks surely matters but like you say lots of folks pretend it doesn't. Since I have been dating, I have dated ladies that some dudes might not want to go near especially those who have been social programmed to consider only slim, tall, light-skinned women as beautiful. Though very few of the ladies I have dated fall into this category, as far as I was concerned they were beautiful. There is always something that attracted me to them; it could be her eyes, her lips, her breast size, her buttocks size, her teeth, whatever but there most be a particular feature that I find attractive.
sometimes my friends had been like what are you doing with that girl? She is ugly and I would smile knowingly, for there is something beautiful in her as far as I am concerned.
I fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down and yet still managed to convince someone to marry me. Must have got lucky.
Some people are unable to get past the social stigma of actually dating what they like. Instead, they find people their friends will accept. screw that.
It might be more important how society lies to itself and can't accept reality...
It's important to remember that even though looks matter, they're a lot more complicated than what media likes to boil them down to. How often do you see a gorgeous woman with a hard body guy? How often do you see them with someone who you might think they're out of his league? Clearly, you don't see the whole picture, but there's also no accounting for tastes. Many girls are into different things. Some would much rather have a guy with a dad bod than a hard bod. Society lies to itself constantly. Even though looks are important, we don't even know what people are really looking for. What I'm into is completely different than what someone else is into.
Looks are important to the individual, it is their preference of course which brings up the next problem of why people get upset if rejected physically ;)
Looks look nice till gravity and old age takes hold. Than you are stuck with whoever that person really was. I still take brains over a nice pair of legs anyway. Granted I’m a bit of a fuggly guy so I guess my “league” of standards are different in one area and much higher in another.
Nice looking things don't be what you tend to take home with every night. They already know they are good looking and expect to much.
Speak for yourself :P
There are some like this but I haven't found that to be the majority.
I’m fugly too my man but managed to score me a wife though. There’s hope for all fuglies out there if the likes of me can find a wife. Don’t worry about sticking to your ”league” dude, aim for the stars, you may fall short and hit the moon.
Good looks do indeed matter. While the person is important, you will first look at it from the outside.
That’s what gets you attracted! From there in it is getting to know each other!
it is a normal qualifier to the next step.
