Looking past the Weed

in #health8 years ago

A few minutes ago while walking the dog I talked with a man walking along with a walking stick, someone who spoke to me last week also. Finns aren't very open to having random conversations with strangers and this guy is in his mid 60s, which isn't the typical, talk to foreigners type, especially in the suburb I live in. Lat week, I found it odd that he spoke and mentioned it to me wife. Today, it got a little odder but, it explained his openness.

He wanted to buy some weed.

This might not be a big statement to say nor unusual in many parts of the world but in Finland, there is still a massive amount of Stigma surrounding it and they are just starting investigating the medicinal possibilities of it here. When I first arrived in Finland 15 years ago, people spoke about weed as if it was an amphetamine and akin to crack cocaine or something. The fear that people had/have surrounding it is quite high. At least for some.

But, here is the thing.

A guy who struggled to walk up a shallow hill with his walking stick in obvious pain is no longer bound to the information of the community, nor their various prejudices surrounding various concepts and practices. Even a person in their 60s. When it comes to the legalization of marijuana for example, even though the decisions are made at a governmental level, the pressure will almost invariably come from the people, the masses and their demand.

These days, just about everyone has access to the same kinds of information and I am certain that with the prevalence of things like cancer, more and more people are searching for alternative treatments, no matter where they live in the world. Marijuana in various forms and strains can help many people who suffer from all kinds of ailments that are normally treated by pharmaceuticals without the side effects or, it can lessen the side effects like nausea of treatments like chemotherapy.

There is so much supporting information online now that it is impossible for a government to dismiss the possibility without appearing draconian or uncaring to the health of their population. Even if it takes decades of time-wasting, eventually most governments will fall into line due to an international peer pressure effect and in places like Europe, the ease of transport.

Now, I felt sorry for this poor guy because despite my apparent appearances, I couldn't help him out but, this is insane. I shouldn't have to help him out to get something that has less side effects than most prescription drugs, has less severe implications and is much less addictive than smoking or alcohol. And, if dependency does form, the results are much less severe, especially in comparison to alcohol related violence and smoking related illness.

The only real reason that the marijuana industry is largely illegal currently is that it is going to put a dent in the profits of the pharmaceutical industry until they find a way to regulate it better, which is obviously developing as I write. If we look at the alcohol industry as an example, even though most people could produce their own forms of drink, the vast majority will purchase the regulated forms because of practicality and of course, taste preferences. We can see that the marijuana industry is now doing this.

For the last few decades at least, even in the countries that it is illegal, various strains and forms have been branded for various reasons and now as legalization sweeps through, the professional marketers can put their skills to use. the continued branding and segmentation of marijuana markets is going to not only give consumers access to range but, make the industry much more scientific rather than anecdotal. Weed is going to go pro.

This means that the industry is going to explode with a whole range of new products and applications that were not previously possible while hidden from view. Research into possibility is also likely to grow exponentially for a time and not only will the medicinal uses be investigated, but other uses for the plant will be revisited like how it was used for sails and rigging for a few hundred years or, Henry Ford's car panels developed in 1941:

This video of a man with Parkinson's disease getting treated is another video that I find incredible:

Without the material uses of it though, the medicinal implications of it make should make it one of the most ubiquitous treatment bases on the planet yet, it is still largely hidden away, illegal and out of reach of most people. However, as people start to get even more into decentralized information, things such as marijuana possibility are unable to be hidden from a populace. Places like Finland will see increasing pressure from the community to investigate and enact change. This will also be further amplified by a government's need to reduce running costs and healthcare is a very large one.

If introducing marijuana can do things like reduce the pharmaceutical requirements of a patient, increase the independence of users, reduce violence from alcoholism and still provide tax revenue, it will get to a point where a government has to implement legalization to keep their expenses down. Of course, there are many ways they can do this.

My hope however is that one day, people like the guy with the walking stick don't have to go up to a stranger on the forest path and nervously ask if they can provide healthcare treatment as to me, that is an indication of a system that isn't working. I wish I would have been able to help him but unfortunately, I can't.

At what point does the suffering of a person take precedence over the legality of a plant? My Mother died of cancer and even though she didn't have chemo, would have benefited from the effects of a little marijuana from time to time yet, would not take it. I offered to get her some from a friend but her programming was so ingrained that it was something negative, that she suffered instead. Hoe many have gone and will go through the same as governments around the world deny treatment? At what point does a community say, enough is enough and openly rebel?

It is interesting isn't it as it would be entirely possible for a population in most countries just to say, we have the right to choose what goes into our bodies as adults and, Light the fuck up.

With the increase of decentralized platforms and broad dissemination of information that will be impossible to repress or censor, a whole host of questions are going to be asked of governments and answers will eventually be squeezed out. The world is changing and although it may seem very slowly at times, there are informational critical mass points that will break the banks and cascade into increasing pools of possibility.

It is because of things like this that decentralization of information is so important to drive forward and, centralization and censorship of information is so harmful. Not every question or whim of a population deserves approval, but asking the questions and opening them for discussion, investigation and consideration is vital for humanity to move past a system of segregation of people and information and into one of cooperation for global improvement.

I do not however think that it will be an easy road nor, one that is traveled quickly. It is going to be difficult and many people are not going to like many of the questions that will get raised and, many governments and industry aren't going to easily give up their hold over markets and populations.

But perhaps, one day, one day, one day...

I see weed as a natural plant that wont harm us at all. People in the ancient history and even modern histrory used such plants. There are even tribes in Australia or Mexico who still use it. We need to get rid of alcohol and have weed :D

Hi taraz, very sad that people are suffering and there is no legal help as such. It must have been tough for him to ask you let alone speak to you about this. Maybe you looked like a dealer walking his dog in the woods for cover. Whatever a dealer looks like mind you I wouldn't have a clue except for the Hollywood movies.
I have seen the parkinson video before and it is simply astonishing how it helps these sufferers.

It must have been tough for him to ask you let alone speak to you about this.

Yeah, he was trying to be casual about it but there is so much stigma here it was hard for him.

Whatever a dealer looks like mind you I wouldn't have a clue except for the Hollywood movies.

Here, they aren't standing on streets or walking dogs. Mostly it is though social network but from what I have heard, the common practice is to "ask someone who doesn't look Finnish" :D

Your wife must have had a chuckle as it seems the older generation think the worst of you.

The oldest are fine, the ones who saw war and grew up with nothing. The children of those (the 50-70s) are the worst in my experience.

Excellent post today, @tararazkp. Like this one, there should be others to see if governments and even society become aware of it. It is already proven how marijuana can not only help in some diseases, the video you share is proof of that, but the benefits in cosmetics and food. I know of oils that are being used with great success for joint diseases and allergies. I imagine, as you say, that there is a mafia that should not legalize the consumption and sale of marijuana. Meanwhile, there is a society that suffers the selfishness of those on top. Nice Sunday!

The few documentaries regarding the medical industry I have watched make me cringe. It is horrible to know what really goes on. Profit before people seems to be the battle cry of most board rooms. Sure there are plenty of good and honest doctors and nurses all around who generally seem to care about their patients to the point if affects their paychecks. I wish there were more.

In my state of North Dakota, I believe that marijuana is still lumped right next to harsh drugs like coke or acid and is punished just as hashly too. this of course is nonsense and may be changing soon but I have my doubts on that. Much of North Dakota is still lost in the past and payed for by massive oil companies and Money loving politicians.

I'm all for the legalization of marijuana here and everywhere as a treatment alternative for expensive and often harmful drug that seem to hurt the body more they they help.

I'm actually surprised more of the mega medical industry has not jumped on this bandwagon yet. throwing up laws that state the only government issued pot would be legal or charge massive fees to grow what already grows naturally on this earth.

Pharma is a circular economy as they treat one thing and it creates symptoms that are treatable with other things they produce. They can essentially make new customers by treating customers.

They wil come in soon enough, much like banks on crypto.

You're right, but there are reasons why drug company's are not quickly moving on some of these plant based models. They have taken both cannabis and mitragyna speciosa (kratom) for extensive test drives in the past.
Patent law involving plant models is apparently a major complication.
Profitability also is said to factor in. There is more to this than this short blurb obviously. Marinol (synthetic THC, not a CBD product) is a schedule 3 drug available by Rx while natually occurring from the Mother that plant and animal share alike is Sched 1 felony.

The alphabet agencies in the US are well aware of the favorable safety profiles of these plants in their natural form when free from contamination and adulteration.

Alot can be explained when you discover that drugs are currently being developed in an express fashion which share some of the advantages that these plants poses which they have or intend to criminalize. (But overall safety, impact on well being and attractiveness are something else altogether).

I'm following few cannabis/CDB accounts on Steemit, and smoke.io is a crypto platform on cannabis as well, I feel just by being on Steemit/in crypto/on blockchains I can find information in abundance instead of googling and ending on very obscure forums where people share their 'dark secrets' on how cannabis just changed their lives and health...

Crazy, and I feel thankful I now have this access, since for both myself and a few loved ones a bit of cannabis can do a LOT.

(Oh, I'm living in the Netherlands, so my tram ride from home to train station of 15 minutes I cross 5 coffee shops, lol, but still info is hard to get, because if I email one of those shops with my questions they answer 'sorry, can't do this, because laws prevent me from giving medical advise. Sigh.)

It is funny how in some places, it is so freely available but the information is not. Lucky for the internet. Freedom of information availability is going to continue to improve our world even though it has its negatives also.

The first approved manufactured pharmaceutical derived from marijuana for people suffering from seizures has been approved in the US, it is something called Epidiolex, I am sure if the price were known it would be ten fold the cost then what people were paying for CBD. I don't think we will ever win this war because as more pharmaceutical companies develop these drugs they will want to protect profit margin, they will not want people to be able to go out and buy CBD from a medical marijuana provider or a local health supplement store. I say that because just as the announcement of this new pharmaceutical coming to approval and market there was stepped up enforcement against those selling CBD.

at the end of the day, BigPharma has the resources to not only produce but also affect legislation. At least, those that are currently suffering could have the chance at aid. That is one step forward.

The guy asked you weed because you look like a foreigner, that's funny :D

Anyway, I wish we would already reach the day when these irrational laws are fixed and the illegal compounds would be actually researched which never happened properly because they were criminalized out of FUD so to speak.

That Parkinson's case – crazy. Never thought it could actually be so effective. And not just marijuana, but many other compounds have potential benefits that could be utilized: MDMA aka. ecstasy has potential with PTSD – in an appropriate setting it can help dealing with intense experiences because it makes one more receiving for emotions. It's dangerous, yes, it can cause long lasting damage with consistent usage, and yes, people have died from it while raving, but that's mainly because of dehydration, which would not happen in controlled setup. And with psilocybin mushrooms there's been some study that it has helped with depression on cancer patients. Potential cure, or at least something that can relieve depression, and is actually ZERO toxic? Seems like something worth experimenting with at least, when antidepressants, like SSRI's, might have side-effects, not to mention that some people won't even have any kind of effect from them.

There's so much misinformation and ignorance around "drugs" (which in itself is a complicated and in many cases quite misguiding term, one that I've already talked about) but I'm hopeful that things will change, I think it's quite inevitable as, like you said, the peer pressure is going to grow so big that eventually it cannot be restrained.

There is a great deal of potential in a great many things and I hope that with more people having access to information, there can be pressure put on certain areas and eventually, a little less suffering might exist in the world. It isn't going to come cheaply.

Because of the hysteria it would be smart of parents of small children in particular if they have a weed habit, however harmless, to keep it to themselves or a close circle of trusted friends. From what I've read it's possible to get into trouble with CPS for that because drugs are bad, you know.
