Inviting fear into the home

in #thoughts7 years ago

In Finland, there is a religious group that doesn't allow television but, it does allow watching essentially the same things from the internet. While this seems hypocritical, there is a distinction which quite a few years ago, one of my students explained.

The difference is that from television programming is passively fed, while on the internet it is an active choice. This is pre many of the services that are in place now remember but, the thinking still holds. Passive versus active.

Yesterday in a class we were discussing carotid things and it came up that I don't watch the news and haven't for several years. My argument is much the same where people choose to watch on loop news programming that chooses what is relevant for them and surprise surprise, nearly all news services cast the same 5 or 6 stories a day. It off all of the millions of events, they all choose the same.

Imagine if we were all in a supermarket and were tasked to buy 5 items of our choosing. While we might mostly have basics like bread and milk, there would be a very wide variation in other products based on our individual needs and preferences at the time. Yet, turn on the news and they give us the view that they know what is important for us all.

Even at a quite localised level, this isn't true yet we feel compelled to watch and 'stay up to date' otherwise we are ignorant. Stay up to date, like a program or a virus checker. The news is more like updating the virus itself, the programming that makes us vulnerable as what it chooses to loop with very little justification are things that incite fear with no regard for any nuance or explanation nor, relevancy to our lives at all.

While it triggers our emotions and makes us feel like we have an understanding of what is going on, rarely is there any evidence of quality or objectivity, no matter how it is presented. And of course, depending on the service consumed, the story can change markedly without consideration to other perspectives.

News is a consumer product and the news services position themselves as authorities who are qualified to give us our view of the world and we lap it up like hungry kittens. It is packaged in a way that makes us feel knowledgeable with a complete overview of a situation, which doesn't encourage deeper exploration.

The view is almost 100 fear inducing, anger evoking or polarizing and will on average decrease options. Fear makes us more passive and therefore less outgoing due to the perception if risk, anger makes us more violent with less consideration for negotiation, and polarization gives us an enemy that we feel that is either oppressing us and restricting our movements and should be destroyed.

And, we sit down in the safest place in the world, get comfortable and invite this into our homes. Daily. Passively absorbing a chosen view of global events with no consideration to who is doing the choosing or what their agenda may be.

We also do not question whether what we learn helps us in our lives or harms us as all we are programmed to do is to listen to what we are told and behave as expected. While people's attention is drawn to consume and discuss world events and scandals with no connection to their lives, at a local level they are controlled by those who actually have influence.

In my view, rather than consuming what provides nothing, learn skills that can be used to increase life possibilities and bring joy and fulfilment. I don't think many feel fulfilled after eating the news, no matter how much is rammed down the throat.

The difference is that from television programming is passively fed, while on the internet it is an active choice.

This is such a massive difference - and fundamentally alters the relationship between the producer and viewer..
(it's no accident that the big institutionalized establishment corporations are actively censoring independent you tube producers - even bringing in financial companies t help them stifle independent voices - a la the 'Patreon' situation, right now..)

Passively absorbing a chosen view of global events with no consideration to who is doing the choosing or what their agenda may be.

It's quite sad to see the amount of people that never think of the agenda as their very first question... in fact, understanding peoples motivations for doing anything is possibly the most important bit of information you ever glean..

While people's attention is drawn to consume and discuss world events and scandals with no connection to their lives, at a local level they are controlled by those who actually have influence.

....I would say that the big events in the US (for example) have far more relevance to people lives in Europe - mid and long term, (if they are looking to future) , than anything their local counselor is getting upto...

It depends on what their attention is on, rather than where.

The obsession on famous people in Hollywood, for example - is bordering on mental illness.

Understanding geopolitics (or trying to) is a different story altogether.

The large economic events in the US perhaps but watching the news isn't going to help much with that. or any of the real geo-political issues. News is useless.

'The news' (establishment msm), isn't useless.

It's much worse than that ! ....It's positively malignant....I does offer the chance to see the lies, though.

They are not very good at what they do - in todays internet age..

I have even stopped watching the financial news as the same practice is happening and even impacts the financial markets which is crazy ok consider. Amazingly, the same is happening with online interactions as despite us thinking we are choosing, many AI algorithms are behind the scenes selecting what to put in front of us by their priority and not necessarily ours.

Amazingly, the same is happening with online interactions as despite us thinking we are choosing, many AI algorithms are behind the scenes selecting what to put in front of us by their priority and not necessarily ours.

Every click we make on most large sites has a team of behavioral scientists engineering it.

And on top of that people who watch a lot of TV generally don't create anything worthwhile and still complain about the lack of time or how busy they are...

I find that funny too. I would like an blockchain that tracks people's activity 24/7 and then gives the individual a report on how much time they wasted doing nothing of consequence.

The part of the arguments about passive news and active news is what really get me interested , like myself I prefer the active news that I read from the internet and watch because to me these news are truly raw and undiluted with the right facts and it is also very current.

It also gives more chance to keep delving deeper. Most people watching the news from TV aren't going to search afterward for most topics.

You are very correct. No matter what I hear on the news, I still don't feel they are telling me the complete truth. That is why I don't watch the news often again, especially when I discovered steem😄.

Steem takes up a lot of time. =)

I understand completely as I have no time for television programming. It is way too passive for me and I much prefer the internet. I feel the internet has more homegrown Grassroots. Whereas television is state-run and controlled manipulated. There is a war on for our minds and I am not a sheeple. Thanks for sharing @tarazkp

We are what we eat and they aren't feeding us the good stuff.

I would be part of a cult that doesn't watch any corporate news, especially on tv ... i can't stand that mindless brain washing shit. sign me up !

Freaking nonsense isn't it. what is worse is making celebrities out of news readers...

After giving up news for a while it all seems really overly dramatic and fake. I don't know how I was able to stand it in the first place.

Designed to incite outrage and impatience without ever approaching the need for solutions.

By the way, thank you for opening my eyes about the nature of DStors project a while ago before all that drama...

It was pretty hard to believe more people who were shilling about the project either didn't read the white paper or didn't understand it.

My respect for many people took a huge hit.

I think community trust was broken with the DStors/DCommerce split up.
