Forced verification

in #thoughts7 years ago

I just logged into @bittrex and found that my account has been disabled. Umm, why?

Well, according to these reasons, I should be in the clear unless it was hacked but, I can still log into it so I am guessing that is not the case.

When I changed my passwords the other night however, I received this email:

But it explicitly states:

If you did not initiate this request, please disable your account and file a ticket at support.bittrex.com

Idid initiate it and there is no link to say such, only if I didn't initiate, I should disable my account. Seems pretty silly considering now that my account is disabled I get this:

That was me trying to cancel an order. Nice.

So now I am stuck waiting for @bittrex support to correct a problem that shouldn't have existed in the first place on the change of a password. What they should have sent was a popup to check the email and a then a confirmation to make sure it was actually me who initiated the password change. It is not like Bittrex are shy sending emails as every time I login I get one and I get another whenever the IP changes. That makes for a lot of email correspondence, much of it is unnecessary perhaps.

I don't know if it would change anything but I don't have 2FA enabled on Bittrex (I do on others) and probably should but at the same time, their system shouldn't disable accounts on every password change as in my opinion, it is part of normal account security to change passwords from time to time or if one suspects they had been exposed. Mine was just a change in password - I didn't suspect my password had been compromised.

So then: I am forced to send identification for verification to get my account re-enabled for a disable that they initiated? That is pretty dodgy in my opinion, but unfortunately the way pretty much all of the exchanges are going to wind up operating to comply with legal requirements. Meh, this is only the start of it all of course and while everyone wants crypto and blockchain to mainstream, a big part of that is going to be falling into line with governing bodies. Pity.

Freedom??

Oh, after trying to verify they said it now has to be done manually and it will take up to a week....

No, KYC was recently enforced on everybody, not just you because of your password issues.
My verification was done in just 5 minutes...

I heard it was going to happen a year or so back but hadn't heard of it happening this way, only for new signups.

I get the importance of passwords and stuff but I have to say it drives me bonkers. I have over 130 of the bastards. Good luck with your verification.

LastPass is your friend.

I get annoyed nowadays when a service rejects my +40characters password, generated and saved by LastPass, because too long. Even saw some sites which considered them too complex too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks, I'll check it out. Much appreciated.

For 3 dollars a month it seems decent

Bloody hell, I'll have to get a second job!

Yeah, going through the livechat helpdesk for it now.

It seems they are picking accounts. I heard earlier today it had happened to somebody else when initiating a $18 transaction.

They probably want to increase their %KYC percentage.

Yep, they are trying to get everyone on board for a shafting....

I got shafted,
And all I got was a lousy crypto T-shirt.

:D

Saves you from having to buy one on your next Amsterdam visit.

Speaking about T-shirts. Did you see those pitiful swag packs (5) with a t-shirt, a notebook and two plastic tumblers Bittrex gave away via their social channels for their fifth.

Clearly running isn’t exchange isn’t as interesting anymore as it was back in the day.

I did the verification about a week ago because I got an email that unless I do so, the account will be locked. It feels a bit scary to send in your id but I guess that is what has to be done.

Yep, I didn't get any warning but always figured it would go this way. The problem with no warning is that it is a trading site and 24 hours can be a very long time.

Hope you've managed to resolve it with their help desk

Unfortunately, this is another reason why adoption in crypto will take time as exchanges never have the best customer support despite the amount msnof money they make when volumes spike. I hope that one day the user interfaces of DEXs improve to rely on them instead of centralized exchanges.

It went okay but it will take 24 hours to process. There system needs some streamlining though.

I hate this fact tbh. Growth means regulation and there’s no real way around it. You can skirt the regulations for a bit but at some point verification and tax regulations take president,

It is much like those who believe themselves anonymous, eventually it all catches up.

People complain about blocktrades but they didn't make me send them my ID.

Not yet perhaps but eventually they will be forced as they are a registered business too and for them to operate, they have to comply to their local laws.

What are you going to do about these exchanges? They've got their own best interests in mind. Do what I do and try and go P2P as much as possible and use exchanges as little as possible.

Not much to be done when they hold one's assets.

I think their customer support takes like two weeks to even resolve an issue really and I don't see why changing of password should pass as a red flag really anyway I do hope they resolve it sooner

I have verified it now through the helpdesk and it will take 24 hours to re-enable. Not too bad other than having to do it in the first place.

Oh that would be a relief then
