Fade to black

Midnight itself is my favourite time of a day as it is the point where I am the most creative, where I push my mental boundaries. I think it is because it is a boundary point it itself. A time that straddles night and morning, one day from the next. For some, boundaries are to be feared, to be avoided and never tested. Maybe this is why many believe and are frightened of the 'witching hour', for it is where change happens. When spells are cast and werewolves turn.

Maybe the fear is a cultural implant, a mechanism of control. Avoid the fences, stay close to home, fear the night. What I have discovered, I am not the only one who becomes creative in the darkness, many others are this way too. Maybe it is where the mind gets tired and loses its inhibitions, or perhaps, it is where the mind wakes up enough to break them.

For me, I think it is the latter. The day restricts me, shines a light on what is there and defines the space by sight alone. At night, the details drop away, shadows form and edges blur. What is there disappears and what could be there takes its place. Imagination is now free to fill in the gaps, create a new world.

Some imagine monsters, I imagine so very much more.
