Ending the weakened

in #thoughts8 years ago

We are quite an eclectic bunch at Steem.

There are blockchain experts of course and cryptocurrency specialists, interested and wannabes. Plenty of political activists and all manner of artists from photographers and writers, to painters and carvers. There are sports and health nuts and cat lovers. There are plenty of rich and a lot more poor. People from wealthy countries and many from countries that have been torn apart in many different ways. There are business professionals, unemployed, tech experts, factory workers and teachers.

Some want fortune, some want fame, some want connection and there seems to be a common thread that runs through everyone I have ever encountered here.

All want change.

I am yet to meet anyone who is completely satisfied with the situation of the walking world. Whether they are interested in personal freedom, political change or complete restructure, all are trying to get a foothold into a domain where they believe they have the best chance of achieving their goals. No one here has come to stay the same, they all want to improve their position.

This is a beautiful thing, something that can create revolutions.

A revolution does not require violence. It does not require the burning down of all that currently stands. It can be a movement, an awakening, a shift in community consciousness that dismantles what is oppressive and rebuilds it into something supportive.

It need not be a slow process either, it needs to be deliberate action based on a large number of people willing to unite and walk together. We can have that at Steem. We can be so much more than any current social site hell bent on subduing us, conforming us and turning us into products for a few to manipulate and build massive profits upon.

We are each potential nodes in a decentralised enlightenment that can reform the world structures and redistribute resources to where they benefit us all. Where we can become a true source of personal freedom of expression in the real world also.

This sounds idealistic, I know.

This isn't something that will be done easily and it will take time to develop the groundwork, train the necessary skills, locate and bring in the right people, allocate resources and many, many other factors.

Not everyone wants it this way though. Some may want to build a digital world that leaves them in the power positions, the 1 percent. Some think to be there is to have made it, won at the game. They want to recreate a world that has already been proven failed. That is why they are here after all.

Each day when I write, I feel like I am playing a small part in something much larger, a piece in the jigsaw puzzle that will lead us to more autonomy or destruction at the hands of those that crave power.

A lot of what I write is about skill development, especially in skills that are being lost to competitive cognitive artefacts. As technology creeps into our domain to make our life easier, people seem to be under the illusion it is natural evolution, they never consider it is by design.

The less skills we have, the less autonomy, the more reliance on others, the less options, the more controlled, the less free. We become a flock of sheep under the watch of wolves. Unskilled us only benefits one group, and they already have most of the markets cornered.

Again, isn't this why we are here? To wrest our lives back? Step by step, a bit at a time, We can empower the many and end the weakened.

Very insightful, very true to humanist values

A revolution does not require violence. It does not require the burning down of all that currently stands.

It need not be a slow process either, it needs to be deliberate action based on a large number of people willing to unite and walk together.

This is specially true in life-or-death situations, and yet, those in a possition to operate changes take their time, as if it were a walk in the park.

Unskilled us only benefits one group, and they already have most of the markets cornered.

True, it forces us into a new epistemology. Self-teaching becomes a priority now. If we expect the system/government to provide us with the skills we need to face the new challenges, we are fooling ourselves. As you point out, there is a tiny percentage with all those tools and those required to form their substitutes, a still small percentage.

This is something I see as a strength here if people take advantage of the opportunity.

The wheel is turning and that is all that matters. There is movement but we can't see it. SMT's will hopefully show us how fast we are actually moving.

SMTs will in time give a better view of the platform as they will test its capabilities at a different level.

Funny thing is we all feel the World is and should be better, and maybe rightly so, but the change we seek is never ending. Perhaps there is no satisfaction point for us as humans

Not sure if I made any sense with my views though

Makes sense. We are unlikely to be satisfied but there can be a much healthier path of advancement than the current tract.

Just a matter of time for this to happen. I can feel it and smell it.

We have already started the revolution as the decentralized ecosystem has continued to frow and provide different ways to engage and earn resources. These resource may be small for some but life changing for other and just by its functioning it will continue to impact the community. The great thing is that it is only getting started so there is so much more to come and look forward to!

I agree. there is a long way to go but these are early steps toward something more and as new developments come into the ecosystem, the range of options widen for new users to run with.

They want to recreate a world that has already been proven failed.

Not sure if I'm going to make sense here through this headache, but a world proven failed is probably dependant on perspective. For some it may very well be going just as intended...

For some it may very well be going just as intended...

True. It is working very well for some until those it isn't working well for upset the apple cart. We can see it starting already, we are part of it.

It will be interesting to see if there will eventually be enough to tip the balance. At the moment I feel we are little more than a fly in the ointment. Something to be nipped in the bud. If things can't be nipped in the bud, then things could get nasty.

When it comes to crypto I have a feeling that they will want to keep the balance in their favour by either an outright ban (happening in some places) or bringing it under their jurisdiction. The second will probably be the least bumpy ride, with the least opposition as the majority of the population will go along with it. It will be more work for them though, but I think they're used to playing the long game.

I love what you did there with 'weakened'. Dude, we've lived our whole lives being nothing special, you know? We learn from a young age that despite what the stories tell ya, you're not likely to make a difference. So naturally, it's hard to understand that maybe you can make a difference here on Steemit.
It's easy to resign yourself, let someone else do it... Let's not forget many take comfort in their status of "weakened".

To wrest our lives back?

No easy task, I'm afraid. But very interesting post, as always. :)

Definitely not an easy task but, even in failure likely a worthwhile life spent.

We are going to need to develop some new skills if we plan to survive when automation and AI take control of more jobs and the entire system changes. Being part of a decentralised economy that brings freedom is good but we have to take it seriously.
