A study in Dripping Dandelions

in #photography6 years ago

The weather has been unusually good in Finland the last week yet, I have hardly had a chance to enjoy any of it so this afternoon, I decided to indulge myself and headed out with the camera and some extension tubes (poor man's macro) to see what i could see.

I spent most of the time slapping myself quite literally as there is a massive amount of mosquitoes in the forest and every time I paused to take a photo, they chose to indulge themselves also by tucking in on imported meat. However, it was a pretty good time had by all and I was able to experiment a little and capture these. Although not quite I was after, I think they are pretty interesting and I will attempt something similar again, hopefully with more time and less mozzies.

What I like about macro is that even something as ubiquitous and ordinary as a dandelion can take on new forms and perhaps, with the right light, angle and a little luck, can even transform into something quite special. The images I generally like the most of mine are the ones that tell a story and even though there is not much of a narrative in these I quite like them.

The first in the series is the one I enjoy the most though as for some reason, it gives me a sense of adventure, someone stepping out of the shadows of others into the sun and striking out on their own for the first time. There is a feeling of embracing uncertainty, taking a risk and stepping off the edge. Something I currently identify with well.

Even with crappy weather you can make the best of everything . What kinda camera do you have ? The quality and clarity of the drop is fascinating !!

I have an Olympus mirrorless. (EM-1) it is good for the size and weight.

Seconded @tarazkp , there's something about the first one that seems to 'speak'.

Lol I didn't know mosquitoes were so many in Finland ☺? Hope they didn't bite too much friend.

Next time just go with a mind that the bites are a big part of the Great Outdoors experience

I'd also be stupid not to commend the quality of your shots...absolutely spectacular

Mosquitoes are insane in Finland, it makes the tropics look deserted. Although, no mosquito diseases here. There are ~200,000 lakes in Finland plus lots of marshlands.

Thanks :)

It's not so unusual. This type of weather occurs every few years. The last time it was this warm for this long in May was four years ago.

It's not so unusual. This type of weather occurs every few years.

Australian remember so, every four years is unusual considering :P

Weather in Finland is variable first and foremost. Every type of weather is unusual by that criterion here. I remember temperatures at 25 C in late April (2004). But I have also done cross country skiing in Tampere almost a week after May Day. That happened in the 1980s. The weather can go from one extreme to the other in a matter of days.

Also, there is no such thing as typical Australian weather because Australia is very large and extents from the mid-latitudes to the tropics. Tasmanian summers, for example, are very similar to summers in southern Finland whereas the extreme north has a rainy season and a slightly cooler dry season. Then there is the great desert in the middle where subzero temperatures may occur in the dead of the winter at night as well as extreme heat in the summer. Perth has a typical Mediterranean climate.

Hi Taraz. Actually you don't need much narrative as the photographs speak for them selves. It's amazing what we actually miss with the human eye and what detail the camera picks up. We miss so much of what is going on around us literally. The imported meat bit was good though and bought a smile out of me. Thanks for sharing your afternoon walk.

What is amazing is seeing the difference in the aurora through the camera, it is much better than the human eye but, seeing the aurora is always an experience :)

I think Macro tells a story... just a different kind of story. I look at those images and wonder where the drop came from, where is it going, how long did it take to get there, how long will it take to go elsewhere.... and so on.

I look at petals and wonder how the design of such petal is so immaculately conceived. The arrangement of petals around the center of a flower is always a peculiar thing to see. Such symmetry can catch the eye... but the order of things is quite amazing to consider.

These images you took are my kind of shots. I always like appreciating the smaller things that generally go unnoticed. Each little strand of web catching the light, each ruffle on the petals catching the high and low lights... the dance between liquid and solid as the surface tension of the water drops transition to find equilibrium.

It's all quite so amazing in it's intricacy... yet, how many Dandelions are there in the world and how many drops fall in just one Spring Storm?! To think each one is individually unique is absolutely mind-blowing! We are fortunate to be able to appreciate such expressions of beauty! Capturing and sharing is a true act of caring!

Glad y'all are getting some sunshine over there too! Swedish Summer may be ahead of schedule here if the 'skeeters are any indicator. I think when I am trying to get my shots and feel the bite.... of the line in Braveheart....

Year after year out of all those dandelions, none of them will ever be identical. Nature is an amazing feat of engineering yet, we think we can do better in complex areas.

Beautiful! While standing on the edge, enjoy the view and realize there are bigger bugs than mosquitoes in the unknown. Be happy and focus on family.

The biggest bugs don't fit into a macro lens, they are human portraits.

these looks amazing, hope you have a good weather so that you can enjoy more i have nothing to say or describe the beauty of these shots, all are amazing. waiting for more. thank you

The weather is a bit friendly and sorry for the mosquito bites I like the droplet of water from the flower you took the photo at the right time. The photo looks nice and clear

Wow its amazing photos .
The last one is awesome @tarazkp
It indicate every thing in this world has beauty but the thing is how we see them .

My friend, it's good that you have enjoyed nature and have fed the mosquitoes hahaha.
The macrophotographs were impressive, this was the one I liked the most.
