A reminder for my future, maybe ours.

in #philosophy8 years ago

Today while walking the dog, we ran into a guy and his dog on their nightly walk. For some reason, my dog loves this other dog and always wants to spend time playing around with him. the owner doesn't speak English but we manage.

He used to live very close but now has moved about a kilometer further away so is very rarely in the area. The reason was that he had to sell his apartment and start renting because he had to shut down his one-person company because of legislation changes to his industry. The cost of licensing was just far too high for an individual, so much for supporting small business.

He can't by a new place until he has a job but, being in his early fifties and having worked alone for so many years, there is no one willing to take him on. So now, he is somewhat trapped with nowhere to go.

This hits home for me. I know that my time running my own small business is limited and when it does eventually end, I will not only be older, I will be an older foreigner. This is a large part of why I am trying to get some movements going now so that as things inevitably fall away in time, I will have a few revenue streams and hopefully some serious options for something else.

It scares me no end to be in a position where I am unable to earn my way and have to rely on the charity of others to live my life. I am a worker seemingly by design and no matter my financial position, that is the way I am likely to die. I don't know what I would do if in a position where I was unable to work and by extension, be unable to provide for my family. If I make it to 50, my daughter will only be 13 years of age.

I definitely don't want to be in a position where I have to rely on a government handout to survive, it is not only not my type of lifestyle, I do not want a government to have that level of control over me at any point in my life. I have made it almost 40 so far providing for myself, my goal is to make it to the end.

The problem isn't the type of job either as I am one of those people that will do essentially anything if circumstance requires it of me. Add my daughter's well-being into the mix and there may be very few limitations indeed.

The problem is that even the willingness to work doesn't guarantee work nor does having the skills to do the work as going forward, automation and artificial intelligence will increasingly push humans out of the job markets. Sure, that might lead to some utopia where no one need work but even if it does, there is going to be a very difficult transition period. I feel that I am smack bang in the middle of the people who will suffer greatly but never see the benefits.

Not many people want to acknowledge this likely period. It is easy to look into the past and think that jobs will move into other sectors but, this time it will be different. Even if it is similar and people do move, how many are going to be stuck in the area of untrainable with skills that are required unattainable?

I don't think people fully appreciate what is likely coming in the future and how important places like Steemit will be for closing gaps in income for the part-time and unemployed who have very limited options. There are going to be some seriously over-qualified people out of work in the near future.

This is why I am going long. Benefiting in the short term is all well and good but, it doesn't plug those future holes unless I can earn a massive amount more, which is unlikely considering the work I already put in. Yeah, perhaps everything hits the moon and the sun and the stars. Is that really a plan for the future?

As this global shift of employment opportunity grows and speeds up, many, many more people are going to be looking for additional ways to attempt to secure their own futures. They will realise, jobs for life are gone, governments can't support so many unemployed, education prices increase heavily, the returns on traditional investments are falling and the Keynesian economic models continue to fail largr and larger at global levels.

What this means is at some point, the flood gates into monetized platforms, cryptocurrencies and anything that offers additional revenue streams will open and there will be a rush in. Even now, where do you think most signups are coming from? Check the last 100 in the introduceyourself tag and tell me if they are likely to be high earners in the real world.

This is a glimpse of the future as the national economies of the past fail to satisfy the needs of the present. If you don't see the cracks already, you should get your eyes, ears and every other sense checked. In past times of great inequalities, the great levelers were wars. We might not be too far away.

Poverty and large economic disparity has always been a major reason for every war for probably ever. The ones who profiteer from the war are also the drivers for them, the governments and conglomerates. Perhaps it is no surprise how many dynasties are made in times of major conflict. Perhaps the disparity is engineered as a way to solidify their positions at the top. Would a conspiracy like that surprise you?

It is a strange world we live in when we have so many obvious problems and the only real solution is to get over ourselves and cooperate to solve some of them. But, time and time again we have failed and instead play out the same patterns dictated by control and authority.

The same patters exist here. The inherited traits from the autocratic world of history and coding it into the future claiming it as a solution. If the behaviors of people don't change, the results will always be the same. At some point though, there will be no war as an economic leveler, the war will level everything.

I guess in that case though, I won't have to worry about getting a job but, it likely won't come early enough to help the guy with and his dog.

This was a great read @Tarazkp, I often have the same thoughts sloshing inside my head. There are some who think automation will never truly take over, but I guess it depends on our ideas of "how much automation" is actually a take over.

I wrote some on the subject and got attacked by someone who thought I was making a case for elitism. But I find it quite naive to believe that "the worker" will remain necessary in many fields where it currently operates.

We are not even that far away from a massive shift, as a matter of fact the one job that is likely to disappear very soon is "truck driver" and since we know how much of the economy they represent, I can't help but to imagine this being akin to a new type of civil war, Automation vs the family for those what will push back in resistance.

In any case, thank you for some needed brain food.

Thanks for taking the time.

Yes, truck drivers, the people that load and unload the trucks, those that log for storage/dispatch, people who work at roadhouses, petrol stations.... How many jobs need to be lost before the current economics are untenable? But of course, those truck drivers can retrain to work at NASA or become artisans.

I really don't think people understand how tenuous the actual situation is and how little needs to shift to create economic earthquakes. When the wagons circle, I can't imagine the average worker being on the inside.

Drop by any time as it is nice to have some thoughtful feedback.

I must confess shamefully that I read your stuff often, but I've done a poor job in commenting and honestly that's something that needs correcting. I get so caught up with everything I'm doing that I forget that authors (including myself) are putting thoughts out there not just for upvotes, but to have these discussions and one without the other makes the experience bland.

I completely understand, don't worry. I am just glad someone even reads still these days. I have trouble commenting well also lately as life situations apply some pressures. I am also kind of forced to write a bit more than I was to cover the delegation. I am still unable to cover it completely but, I don't want to give it up as I am able to share a bit more out. I can cover the shortfall for now. Luckily, I do love the writing part. Drop a line whenever you have a chance, even if it just says, 'Read.' ;)

This line, @tarazkp

"But, time and time again we have failed and instead play out the same patterns dictated by control and authority.

The same patters exist here. The inherited traits from the autocratic world of history and coding it into the future claiming it as a solution."

It got my attention.

You have a deep mind. You have explained this in an understandable way.

Sincerely, I am working to help people in rural communities to become skilled and be able to live a healthy and peaceful life.

At the same time I think about the possibility that unless we get people to have competencies beyond mere skills, they may become unemployed faster than the time it took them to get a job initially.

Really, human nature is funny. The people on steemit didn't drop from a new continent. We come from other existing platforms and environments where control and authority is the game to play by.

Nonetheless, for a few like you and more people like you, I am sure the world can still be a great place for most to thrive.

Thanks for sharing.

It's a tragedy that's being slowly pushed upon us from above, but a reality that we might see on a much larger scale in a few years. I even saw it when I was in retail as a tiny team dealt with most of the world through mainly automated processes; the people were only really there to answer the phones.

Your article reminded me of something my father told me years ago:
"The future of financial markets offices will be a computer, a man and a dog."
"What's the dog for?" I naively asked
"To guard the computer."
"Then what's the man there for?"
"To feed the dog."

Let's hope the man and dog find themselves in a situation that fortuitous.

It could become a world where the man can spend his time happily throwing a Frisbee to the dog but, I will not hold my breath for that outcome.

shut down his one-person company because of legislation changes to his industry.

Regulations , they always seem to hurt the little guy . Nobody seems to pay attention to this side about governments . It has the most direct impact on society . It is also a tool used by large corporations to prevent competition

in a position where I was unable to work
some utopia where no one need work

The ability not to work is a hard humiliating situation to be in . I do not recommend it did anyone . To think that being in a position where you don't have to work is a utopia is a delusion that people have . People who are in that position always find something to occupy their time that benefits society or themselves . They keep going they just don't stop and go on a permanent vacation for the most part .

behaviors of people don't change, the results will always be the same

I have said many times "that the faces and places change but people don't " . So we are destined as a race to repeat the same things over and over .

People who are in that position always find something to occupy their time that benefits society or themselves . They keep going they just don't stop and go on a permanent vacation for the most part

I see the entertainment industry trying to fill the gap so people need not do anything but consume and feel like they are doing something.

When I say people need not work I mean to work ant the menial and mundane. I am a firm believer that for the sake of our mental health, work provides us meaning and purpose. It need not be for money. Getting paid doesn't automatically imply value.

our mental health, work provides us meaning and purpose

That's what I was getting at . I did not stated so understandable . It is something that is personal to me . It very hard situation to overcome and talk about . so I just put " I do not recommend it .

work provides us meaning and purpose

The problem is that even the willingness to work doesn't guarantee work nor does having the skills to do the work as going forward, automation and artificial intelligence will increasingly push humans out of the job markets.

Automation and AI have the potential to be a massively disrupt many job markets. People don't want to see what is clearly right in front of them, but many jobs will no long be needed once further implementations of current tech and then advancements are made in other tect.

This scares the crap out of me. I don't see a war against machines like terminator, but I do see automation and AI being a cause for the next world war. Jobs that tend to be the easiest to automate are those filled by the lowest end workers. These are the people who can't afford to loose their jobs and likely don't have other options...or very limited other options.

From there you now have widespread hunger and a growing hatred towards those with jobs and worse those who have real wealth. From there war isn't that far off as people look for someone to blame for everything.

For those that can't understand how this comes to be you have failed to learn from history. Go back and understand the starting of WW1 and WW2, go back further in history even. Economic turmoil adds fuel to any situation and we very well may be going that direction.

You have reminded me of another post I need finish...

Seems like I'm on a roll with that today...lol.

You are 100 percent correct. Time to think out the box and make sure you can look after yourself with no hand outs. The robot work force is happening already. Technology is great but it has it's downsides too. Remember a few years ago Switzerland had a vote on whether to pay everyone the same amount of money so it didn't matter if you worked or not. How miserable would that be. I need to get better at this Steemit shit lol.

Articles with the motivation of a life that is very motivated, I like your style of thinking but we all to get a better spirit and the more important passion needed to be a force for us to do something we want it

very good story sir i really like future and society amazing community

very good writing about the future,
you are amazing @tarazkp

end of the day the sad reality is that the vast majority of us are vulnerable to external factors.

Many don't even realise it - which makes it even worse how much of our wealth is sucked up by banks and consumerism. Nobody is putting away for a rainy day.

And people like yourself and I are no longer just worrying about providing for ourselves, it's also now for our kids, and for our wives if/when they're not working...
