A forced update

in #thoughts5 years ago

I thought I'd have a chance to work on my prep for delivery on the train:

20190701_102238.jpg

It hasn't moved from 36% for 10 minutes...

Without a computer my training is going to be "difficult" so, hopefully my pc isn't dead. Well, I am generally prepared and I am sure I could borrow a terminal from someone and deliver from theirs, it would just be awkward. Weirdly, I could also deliver technical software training on a flip chart too, but I really don't want to.

Still at 36%

Training is important for this kind of software as while easy for the end user, the configuration of the platform can be complex, especially since it scales from one person companies our to those with 100,000 employees.

But even for the end user, training helps them build their skillset and the tips and tricks along the way not only make their usage more effective and efficient, it helps them feel comfortable and knowledgeable.

If you have ever been on holiday and done a guided tour of a city, afterward you can feel that you know more about that city, you have a deeper understanding of it and may even relay what you have learned to others. The little tips and facts give you a greater degree of attachment and makes you feel that you know more than others, makes you feel special. It doesn't matter that millions of people have done the same tour.

Of course, a tour is a tour, but to know a city intimately requires living in the city, travelling through the city sectors and having a wide range of experiences within the city. Would a person who was born and raised in, but never ventured out if Manhattan understand New York? Most likely, change the suburb and the person will feel like they are in a foreign city, vastly different from their own.

hanging at 93%

It is impossible to have all experiences and put path is directed from our starting point, yet staying narrow to avoid discomfort will likely be a pain position eventually as things always shift - the code always changes.

Currently on my home city they are putting in tram lines to ease congestion on the roads, among other things. It was 100 years in talks before construction started a year ago and because of the mass of groundwork needed, the disruption is relatively high at some points and people complain.

I will complain probably too when I am running late for work and get caught up at a construction point, but having our apartment near the last stop on the line, we stand to benefit from its eventual completion. Construction hasn't begun at our end yet.

City infrastructure is a massive component of life that most people don't think about until it disrupts their lives. A steem example would be the introduction of Resource Credits where up until that point, lost people didn't think about the bandwidth they use at all. Most people don't think about resources much ever unless they have to pay something to acquire them.

A cost is seen as a loss as it comes out of the pocket and many become acutely aware of the cost when it is classified as an investment purchase because then they want the investment to bring value also. Most do not look at the cost of a can of Coke in the same way, but a dollar on that or a dollar on 2.5 Steem is the same dollar value. One you will piss out an hour later, the other you will be access to digital experiences of various kinds for life. Well, Steem life.

94%

Just like my training contingencies, I attempt to use the resources I have available to me to do the best I can. If I have to draw an interface on the board with a marker to demonstrate, I will.

We all have resources available to us and I see Proof-of-Brain as a process of how we choose to use them to accomplish out goals. Often, the smartest thing one can use the brain for is to work out how best to cooperate and collaborate with others to achieve goals that are larger than any one person can reach alone.

Steem is such a project that is largely useless of there aren't people, much like the tram they are putting in. But rather than waiting for people to get to the point they need a tram and then disrupting them all during construction, a well planned city has provisions for future infrastructure needs built into the design. This is part of scalability management and on a Blockchain, this factors in resource efficiency and security issues, as well as speed and stability. The more that is built in to the foundation that can hold growth, the better, even if there are investment costs (perceived losses) to do so, because the cost of future development is likely to be higher the more people who must get disrupted during construction.

Still 94%

It isn't always easy to feel like you are wearing the brunt of the cost of development that will help others, but sometimes that is necessary. If we look at the resourcing and debt situation of the world today, perhaps a few concessions in the present to empower future generations should have been the ongoing process for the last century or more. Many won't sacrifice themselves though, even if others do.

Interesting applied to Steem as people who talk of the lack of social also choose only to participate in the narrow experiences where they are comfortable. One of the reason people don't get paid on other platforms is that they don't add to the infrastructure, they are just people on the tram utilizing it to go where they need to go.

The owners of the tram are the ones who take the fare, they are also the ones who must maintain the tracks.

95% and the train ride will end soon.

It is an interesting experience on Steem I think as through usage, more people are likely to start thinking about things they haven't thought much about before that affects their lives.

Much like good training would.

Sort:

Those forced updates drive me crazy! The timing is never good - you've turned on your computer because you are going to do something.
Sometimes, analogue technology is good. I find using a flipchart helps me organise and focus my thoughts much better, and really pick out the key things people need to know. They can build the rest around that when you send the presentation later :)
Hope it all worked out ...
Thank you for the snax transfer, really nice little surprise :)

This one was forced by the company. I tried to schedule it last week but it didn't take.

I like flip charts and boards too. I use them often as it creates a more dynamic feel in the training as well as gives connection to the content.

No worries. By the end of it, you might get more snax as it goes to comments :)

I haven't really understood snax yet. I was slow to take up the air-drop and now I'm not sure how it works (eventually I will get around to reading about it), but I enjoy going and looking in my wallet: it's almost a magic money tree :)

I don't know much about it either tbh but I like the idea of having a tokenized layer over any platform.

Apparently computer simulations can figure out the entire global climate and tell us what part man had in its recent changes and where it will be in 100 years.

But a TRILLION DOLLAR company called Microsoft can't accurately run a simulation to predict how long an upgrade will take on your computer and tell you before your computer starts doing it.

Hahaha. It is "part of the Microsoft experience" to help with brand recognition.

I think we all long ago recognized their brand for what it is!

any update? Hope it has gone back to normal

It has. Been working on the material for delivery and thinking I might post a few pics I took on my walk for food. :)

Even those that believe to know all the little secrets of cities and networks come to discover the subtle changes can impact largely over time and it feels that will be the case for Steem which continues to evolve. Imagine the number of people with a Steem account and don’t even know there is blogging involved as they only play Steem Monsters or other Dapps!

Do you have the feeling after going home after a long way away that nothing has change until you actually look?

My sp4 is probably going to sling that at me at some point 😖

I think you drawing on a Flipchart to teach software would be an epic amusing talking point 🤣

I didn’t realise doing a tour or otherwise travelling was meant to make you feel more special and knowledgeable than everyone else. I feel like I’ve been doing my whole life wrong 🤣

Did the stupid update finish in time without destroying anything?

You are living life all wrong. I should write a book on how to do it correctly. ;P

When I interviewed for the job the projector wouldn't work, so I presented their product on the board. Seems to have worked.

TEACH US YOUR SECRETS XD

If it's not one thing... XD

Well I hope the PC springs back to life - as the destructions allure to, turning off the PC during updates is not an ideal scenario!

Seems to be starting up. I only closed the lid and let it run. Will see what damage is done in the delivery to customers I bet.
