Maria Yourievna Sharapova [1] (Russian: Мария Юрьевна Шарапова, International Transliteration: Marija Jurjevna Šarapova), born April 19, 1987 in Niagan, Siberia, is a professional Russian tennis player.
She is the first Russian to achieve several major performances on the women's circuit. First, she was the first Russian to win Wimbledon at the 2004 edition. On August 22, 2005, she became the 16th player in history and the first Russian to become No. 1 in the world WTA [2]. She is then the first player in her country to win the 2008 Australian Open. Finally, she is the 10th player in history (the 6th of the Open era) and the first Russian to win the four Grand Slam singles tournaments during her career: Wimbledon in 2004, US Open in 2006, Australian Open in 2008 and Roland Garros in 2012 and 2014. She is the best Russian player in the history of tennis and she also has an Olympic silver medal won in London in 2012.
