Fun experiment: Making quill pen ink.

Doing calligraphy and having a birthday.

My husband has a particular fondness of quill pen writing and since it is his birthday today I decided to find a post on how we can make our own ink. He loves doing calligraphy so this will be an amazing way or making our own ink and helping him to have a lot of ink on hand.

Make your own ink

You will need the following:

  1. Measuring cup
  2. Water
  3. Dish soap
  4. White glue
  5. Small jar or vial to store the ink.
  6. White vinegar
  7. 10 nails
  8. Wooden spoon
  9. 4 bags of black tea.
  10. Small bowl
  11. Plastic crap.

Instructions:

  1. Clean the nails.
Pour a 1/4 cup of dish soap into a bowl with 2 cups of water. Leave the nails in the soapy water for half an hour.
  2. Drain all the soapy water and make sure that you dry the bowl and the nails.
  3. Place the dry, clean nails back into the bowl
  4. Pour enough vinegar over the nails to cover them. After this cover the bowl with plastic wrap.
  5. Let the nails soak in the vinegar for two days.
  6. After the two days boil the bags of black tea in a cup of water for ten minutes. Let them cool down.
  7. Mix equal parts of tea and the nail-vinegar liquid (remember to remove the nails) into the vial.
  8. Fill your jar about 3/4 full.
  9. After this mi the glue until the ink is thick enough to write with.
  10. The ink will turn black when it dries on the paper.

Wow! Your are talented and creative.. I have to try this next week.. Thanks for posting this meaningful post @tanya

It's a big pleasure

ah... I have tried so many times with different feather, none of them produces beautiful calligraphy...

Oooh this is interesting...I love calligraphy but have never had a true quill pen. I’m a nurse and I would totally taken it to work and do my charting all fancy with my cool pen— though it would take hours lmao

Have you tried other colours for the ink before? It's great that there are a few keen calligraphers around and it would be great to see some posts on this topic as well :) I personally like repurposing ink bottles for creative artworks but they are quite expensive and hard to come by :(

If I had any level of hand-eye coordination, creative talent, or penmanship, I would absolutely do this with the kids!

Reality being such as it is, however, thanks for the amazing new project for the kids to do with their Aunt!
