Geometric shapes can be find all around us, but before we look for geometric shapes, lets introduce it first.

What is a geometric shape?

A geometric shape is what is left when you take away the location, orientation, reflection and scale. This is where triangles, squares, circles, rectangles. They can then be classified into 2D and 3D shapes.

2D geometric shapes

2D shapes means that you can only see the height and width of the shape (only 2 dimensions), like when it is drawn on paper. These are the basic 2D shapes:

3D geometric shapes

3D shapes means that you can see height, width and dimensions. It can move. It can travel forwards, backwards and sideways. These are the basic 3D shapes:

Let's have some fun.

Today we are going to do a few activities to practice our geometric shapes.

Activity 1: Make 3D shapes

You will need the following

• Spaghetti/sticks
• marshmallows

Instructions:

• Provide each learner with a different 3D shape picture. It is important that the shape must be age related.
• If possible, age related, let the learner figure out how many sticks they will need.
• You can then provide them with marshmallows and show them how to put the pieces together.
• Let them then discover and make mistakes and try again. If they made a shape and they want to make another one, let them.
• For the younger kids you can already make a "shape bag". In this bag you put in the picture of the shape they must create, enough sticks for the shape, and enough marshmallows.

Activity 2: Play dough Geometry (2D shapes)

This activity is especially suited for the 2-4 year old range.
You will need the following:
*Cards with the shapes on. (see picture) Enough that each child can receive a card of each shape
*Sticks
*Play dough
Allow the children to experiment and form the shapes of the card they received.

Activity 3: Fold 3D shapes

This activity is a bit difficult for certain ages, but some children might surprise you.
You will need the following:

• Templates of 3D shapes
• Paper
• Scissors
• Glue

Instructions:
Each learner receives a template of any of the 3D shapes that they must recreate. They then cut out the template. If you want them to, you can let them color each template. After this, they can fold and paste the pieces.

When all the learners finished their 3D shapes let them play with it on the carpet and see what they can create.

Halloween Activity 1

Today we are going to make a witch using different shapes:

You will need:

• Paper to cut out the following shapes: Triangle for the hat and a smaller one for the nose, rectangles for the hair and mouth, and squares for the eyes.
• Glue

Have fun with shapes and sometimes you can just let them be and create. Give them the shapes etc and let them create their own masterpiece.
