Evolution of a movement with documentation 2 (Set "Award Tour")

You had single parents on welfare. People didn’t work, there weren’t jobs or anything. You couldn’t go to certain areas. You couldn’t go in here or there
There were homicides, assaults, police murdered people, others went to jail for the rest of their lives". Grand Wizzard Theodore

While New York adults were lost in the glitter of the Disco, Bronx children were looking for something different.
And they found him at a local DJ’s parties.
Kool Herc. The man who threw the first Hip Hop party.
"This is the cradle. The Big Bang. 1520. Where it all began. 1520 Sedgwick Avenue". Kool Herc
"The kitchen and the two windows of the recreation room.
Gangs terrorized the parties. So we asked if we could throw a party, and you know, they liked the music on and the rest is history". Kool Herc
Could you describe the atmosphere of that party, August 11th?
"The site could probably only house 40 to 50 there, at most.
I was carrying milk boxes, there were no chairs or anything, just a few boxes and my friends were having fun". Kool Herc
"My first Kool Herc party was on the West Side of the Bronx. It looked like an abandoned building. But the women went there as if it was okay.
As we get closer and closer we start to hear some sounds and there I realize it was Kool Herc". Dj Red Alert
"The Festivals of Herc were surreal. Their voices went through an echo chamber. And at that time we smoked grass and took angel dust.
There was loud, resonant music, it was dark, full of smoke, and their voices came with echoes. You go through all that and there are people watching and dancing, and a wave that Herc had, a kind of emotion and a bit of danger". Melle Mel
"I remember going to the bass box, sticking my head in and closing my eyes, and the bass was rumbling all over my body, up to my toes". Kurtis Blow
A lot of people claim to have gone to that party, but how many people were actually there?
"They weren’t. They heard about her.
Their older brother told them. His older sister told them.
They’re war stories. They weren’t. Ask them how old they were.
What does that tell me? He wasn’t there. That’s it. [How old are you? Yeah.]". Kool Herc
"Herc was a revolutionary, he revolted.
He didn’t want to play the Disco music we heard on the radio. He wanted to give us the music we grew up with, the Soul music. And it was amazing. Because in the disco world, here comes this DJ who plays special music. And that was very important for the birth of Hip Hop, we were going to play Funk". Kurtis Blow
"You listen to the best records you’ve ever heard and you’ve never heard them before, you never heard them on the radio. You don’t hear them anywhere. They’re part of the sacred Hip Hop bows". Grandmixer DXT
