Something to Ponder
I was reading this review http://entertainment.time.com/2012/11/08/lincoln-spielbergs-urgent-civics-lesson/ in Time, and continued to the comments section, as I am inclined to do, to see what others had to say about the film. It was there that I saw the comment below:
A nation unable to remember it’s past is also a nation who will fail. It made me think about a line from a Nina Simone song, “it’s all just a little bit of history repeating.”
If we are ignorant of our past, how can we avoid making the same mistakes, doing the same things, over and over again? We can’t progress if we keep treading the same few feet of ground.
This is why, it seems, that as a nation we keep having the same damn arguments (or variations thereof)… no one remembers the past. History is not just for old people and dusty books and dark corners of the internet. It is for all of us to learn from and remind us exactly what we have overcome to get where we are.
Which is apparently 2 centimeters ahead of where we have been. Not a lot of progress.
You are really so great movie.
