Making the Most of Your Session
“What should I wear?” This is a question I’m asked on a regular basis – so I thought it might be helpful to put it on the blog. I generally ask clients to bring a few different outfits with them to a shoot, so that we can have a little variety to work with. When choosing outfits consider the following:
Clothing: I want to capture you looking yourself. Find colors or trends that jump out at you. Are you urban chic? Playfully modern? Romantic and vintage? Buy some signature piece. Sometimes the best shots of people are when they feel they’re being a little daring – so make a statement. A few words of advice on what to avoid – bright white shirts, logos and small/busy prints, too much skin, and too matchy-matchy.
Hair and Makeup: Why not get your hair and makeup done for your engagement session? In addition to making you feel fabulous, you’ll be certain to feel more confident during your session and more pleased with the results afterwards. You’re hiring a professional to take your pictures, why not hire a professional to make you look your best for them?
Props: Sunglasses, hats, mustaches, balloons, bubbles, flowers, books, furniture, and signs – these are all great ways to set your session apart and express yourselves!
Location: Think about the kind of backdrop that expresses who you are, as well as places that are meaningful to you. I’ll gladly follow you to your favorite haunt or first date.
Multiple Changes: I like to mix it up and I feel like clothing changes make one feel a bit more like a super model! My sessions allow for outfit changes depending on the location and how much time we have. Clients who choose more than one outfit generally go for one dressy and one casual look, or one very stylized and one classic look. Whether you choose to change is up to you!
For Families and Groups: Consider using coordinating colors for your group. For example, everyone could wear jeans and tops with complimentary colors (brown and teal, red and blue, pink and green, etc.). This way the photo isn’t busy with conflicting patters and colors that distract the eye and keeps the emphasis on your face.
