SECOND SKILLS NEEDED FOR COMPLETE COMMUNICATION

Good evening Steemians. How has been your day? Okay guys,I started the Four skills for good communication yesterday which I said I will be taking for four days. I talked about The Listening skills which is the first skill.

Today,I would be carrying you along with the next one which is SPEAKING SKILLS. You can check my blog for the first skills I posted yesterday.

WHAT IS SPEAKING SKILLS?

Speaking is the second language skill,and probably the one that most language learners wish to learn and perfect soon as possible. Speaking is the productive skill in the oral mode. It is more complicated than other skills than it seems at first and involves more than just pronouncing a word.

Speaking is one of the natural skills bequeathed to every human being at birth. Speaking skill is also the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and nonverbal symbols,in a variety of contexts.

Why speaking is so important

There are some reasons why speaking skills is given great importance;

• Speech is the only natural way in which every normal child shows that he/she understand his/her environment.

• A greater percentage of an individual's,everyday activities involves speech.

• Writing is representation of the spoken form.

• While every language has a spoken form,not all languages have a written form. This shows the powerful and supremacy of the speakings skills.

THERE ARE SOME FACTORS THAT ARE AFFECTING SPEAKING SKILLS AND WHICH MUST BE ATTEND TO FOR EFFECTIVE FLOW OF COMMUNICATION. These are;

• Interference: This is a situation whereby the mother tongue of a learner affects the way the learner pronounces the words in second language.

• The rate at which learners speak English language is low. The students speak their mother tongue all the time even in school environment and at home. So,this affect their ability to speak English very well.

• Another factor is the Biological problem. This obstructs the effective speaking language. A stammerer finds it difficult to speak very well. He/She articulates the sounds of the language disjointed in the process,the message is often lost.

• Another is that learners possess more words their mother tongue than the second language that they are learning.

• Learners are not provided with suitable and enabling environment which will encourage them to speak English both in school and at home. Failure to do this,will affect their speaking ability because they say, "Practice makes perfect."

MICRO SKILLS

Here are some of the micro skills involved in speaking. The speaker has to:

• Pronounce the distinct sounds of a language clearly enough so that people can distinguish them.

• Make the main idea standout from the supporting ideas or information.

• Use the language variety that is appropriate/suitable to the situation and relationship to the conversational pattern.

• Use vocabulary appropriately.

• Use the correct forms of the words.

• Put words together in correct word order.
