Steemit Critique #2 — July 2018
Hello everybody this is the first issue of Steemit Critique and even though I was a little bit aggressive and I sounded angry in my Steemit Critique Manifesto I promise that I'll tone it down a little. I really care about making this place better and I do hope that one day Steemit will become the number one social network in the world.
Anyway enough of this, let's get into it.
That's All That Matters
The best products in the history of the world all share one thing: quality. Steemit is and sounds like an awesome product but if we want it to become the next big thing, we all have to do something, especially you whales and dolphins.
The only way for Steemit to succeed is to keep gaining new users but if things stay the way they are now, I honestly don't see it happening.
Today I want to focus on the quality of the posts because it's the first thing people check once they create an account or once we show this social network to a friend. The trending section is filled with posts that most people don't care about (some are really good though) or with shitty posts and the hot section is even worse.
This needs to change or else most people will never start using steemit. The other day I showed here to a friend and after me explaining what's good and what's bad, he said: "not for me dude, I'll stick with Instagram, Reddit and Twitter, this place doesn't look that appealing for someone who doesn't post a lot".
Can you blame people who are not attracted by the posts here? I can't. Most people on this platform, minnows, dolphins and of course whales too, don't write quality posts, very far from that and in the long run this sad fact will be one of the reasons why steemit didn't go mainstream.
You all have the power to change this. Come on people, start writing better posts and don't write and reblog a billion things every day, it's really annoying. I'm begging you, especially you whales and dolphins, you people that are actually making a lot of money, please start posting good stuff, don't be greedy, think about the future. Remember that when you make good money with shitty posts that really hurts this social network.
More hardwork now, for way better return in the future.
Reviews of Trending and Hot Posts
I'll do this randomly and only posts where the written word is more important than the video(s) shared. I won't be reading hundreds of articles, who got the time for that and what would the point of doing that even be. Then why am I doing it? One reason is to motivate people to write better posts and the other reason is to show how bad it looks to newcomers. I'll be giving stars, five stars for a great post and one for a bad ones, anyway I'm sure you get it.
OK let's get into it.
5 Random Trending Posts
Certik Building Fully Trustworthy Smart Contracts and Blockchain Ecosystems
I don't really have that much to say about this one. Good review of this ICO, easy to read and with enough info, I liked it.
🌟🌟🌟🌟
Bombus Cicaris Flying Between Flowers
Are you kidding me? Sure it would be fine for a Facebook post to share with your friends but on the Trending section here and made almost 400 dollars? Are you kidding me? All you can see in this post is a very superficial description of what's going on and pretty average photos.
🌟
Top Reasons to Come to the Steem Creators North Conference
Trending section and almost 800 dollars for a post advertising an event...Seriously?
🌟
The Sec Rejects Another Petition for a Bitcoin ETF
He shared that news and told us his opinion. Not a post worthy to be in a trending section but not bad, I liked it.
🌟🌟🌟
Sci-Fi Novel The Ultimate Debate - Part-23: Illegal Clinic
I didn't read the whole novel but hey I said I'll be doing this randomly so...It's the 23rd part of a novel this author is writing here on Steemit and from what I read in this post, it looks pretty good and I love people creating new things and writers trying to make it here on Steemit have my respect.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Hot Posts
Next month I'll be reviewing posts from the hot section too but only articles who made less than a hundred dollars. Here I want to actually use a tag. Which tag do you suggest? Blog? Writing? Life? Travel? Food?
If you enjoyed and if you think it's a good idea to review random posts please let me know in the comments section.
New Tutorials and Updates
Steemit added 18 new tutorials to help developers with theirs tasks.
Each tutorial outlines a specific task such as "get all posts by an author" or "claim rewards." These tasks are perfect for developers who want to create a new front-end or improve automation on existing products.
The other new updates involve API definitions, Image Hoster and mobile navigation.
From Steemitblog
About API
the definitions now include more detail such as the hardfork, in which a particular method was first introduced, as well as which methods are disabled. Under the hood, we're using steem-ruby to evaluate the current methods, which is much faster than before because it uses json-rpc-batch to get the method signatures.
About Image Hoster
That’s why we’ve added documentation for running and using ImageHoster to the Services section. This will be helpful for developers looking to host and proxy images in their own front-end applications.
About mobile navigation
The site’s mobile navigation has been improved with a functional “hamburger” (☰) element, as well as “back to top” footers to keep your thumb from cramping up.
We also added SteemConnect4j to the community resources section, which is a software development kit for interacting with SteemConnect in Android products.
Good job Steemit, keep up the good work.
Opinion: Need to find a way to have fewer posts
Let's be honest here, it is annoying when people share too much. Do those people think that we only follow them or that they are that interesting and knowledgeable that we can't get enough of them? The over sharing it's the number one thing I hated about Twitter and on Facebook didn't you always disliked those people always sharing pictures and whatever videos or articles on a daily basis? Well I did and most people do. No, unfollowing them wouldn't help that much because when I use tags to find the posts I'm interested in, there I find them again...
Another problem with people sharing a lot every day is that most posts go unnoticed because of it and this will only get worse once more and more people will start to use Steemit.
So what can we or Steemit do?
What we could do is to not share more than two or three posts per day and hey "oversharers" it's 100% OK if you don't post anything for a couple of days. But people can't be trusted so it's on Steemit to find a way to prevent users from sharing too much.
My suggestions
- No money after the third post
- Decrease the reputation of people who post too much
- Have a limit on posts and reblogs
Any other ideas?
I hope you enjoyed this and please let me know in the comments section what you think about it. Suggestions are very welcome.
some good stuff here, useful and well put together...you are right about the trending...it's a poor representation of what is and what isn't quality. Doesn't give users the ability of where the bar should be for sure.

I really want to reply to your article, but It's hard deciding to do so. What if my response is a low quality answer or it is not appreciated by the majority. Probably I'm the only one understanding myself. So difficult.
Please do. If you are being sarcastic, good job...
sarcasm is the only emotion i truly understand
i want to know which end of the siphon you're on?
