RE: So Exciting! Stop 1 of the Four-city Tour to Promote Mayweather VS McGregor!
I would love to hear your opinions on this fight. I am very conflicted, as I am am avid boxing fan but despise Mayweather. Only as of late have I really gotten into UFC, and it has been only because of McGregor. I have seen and heard a lot of people who are pretty annoyed by this impending fight.
Well glad to see you have gotten into MMA. Personally, I am conflicted also. Don't get me wrong, I grew up on boxing and mma. I am partial more to MMA. To me, boxing has been somewhat boring. I never really liked Mayweather. I respect him, and I do think he's the greatest technical boxer that has ever lived. But as far as a fight goes, that can be boring.
I really never expected this fight to happen. While mma and the UFC have some pretty great strikers, it's still totally different than traditional boxing. For one, the stances are very different because you have to defend takedowns and throws, which you do not have to worry about. You'll never see Floyd come to MMA, ever, never, period. So, I give props to McGregor to crossing over to a fight where he will not have the advantage. He's taking a huge risk, and technically, he doesn't have the boxing skill level to beat Floyd.
However, I think many are underestimating McGregor. I don't think that McGregor is going to go in and try to play a straight up boxing game. He's going to do what he always does, and move in a very unorthodox way. It's a very big X factor that Floyd really doesn't know what to expect like he would against any of his past opponents.
In the end, I'm happy this fight is taking place. Regardless of who wins, I think it helps both sports, it helps both economies. Yes, there are technically some much better boxing fights you could put on, but boxing just doesn't have that "it" factor like it once did. And that's not bashing boxing. The UFC has changed the game when it comes to fight promoting.
I don't know if Conor has a legit chance, but my money and hope is for Conor to win. If Mayweather wins, everyone will say, see, he should have won. McGregor is the true underdog here, but we've seen him play the underdog role much of his career. If he happens to pull this off, he will truly be a legit mega-star.
The best thing about this fight, is it's bringing about lots of opinions, lots of buzz, and in the end that's a fight promotor's dream. The real winners are the fans though. You don't get too many fights where athletes cross over. That alone is special.
