Open Ledger uses the Bitshares blockchain in the same way that Steemit uses the Steem blockchain.

They did and still do. The company behind it (CCEDK) even has it's own 'branch' and token for that: ICOO.
Of course that is what I was thinking of. Will need to check it out!
