Wednesday Walk - COVID-19, Deserted Roads And Streets.

in GEMS4 years ago

The coronavirus pandemic has been growing at a brisk pace. More than 2.1 million people have been infected so far throughout the world and the number only keeps on increasing. The United States is the most affected country with over 650 thousand cases. There are some recoveries as well but not at a pace we would have hoped for. The death toll is nearing a figure of 150 thousand with the U.S on the top of the chart with 32 thousand deaths.

India has over 13 thousand cases with more than 400 deaths. The prime minister of India, Narender Modi extended the lockdown till the 3rd of May which was otherwise going to end on the 14th of April. Because of the lockdown, we have been unable to go out frequently. We just buy groceries once or twice a week. I was feeling very dull and the atmosphere around me felt suffocating, that's why we decided to take a small walk and refresh our minds.

You won't see such clear skies often in New Delhi as it is one of the most polluted cities in the world but because of the lockdown, the pollution is gone and there is fresh air everywhere to breathe. Me and my friend were talking about pollution while walking and the surroundings seemed very nice and clear.

This is the main road where you have to wait for the signal to turn blue if you want to cross the road. But because there was very little to no vehicular movement, we were able to walk freely and cross whenever we wanted to. There was very little movement of people on the main road.

The police have put barricades and other forms of restrictions on almost every road other than the main one. This is to ensure that no vehicles enter the residential areas. The most guarded roads are the ones that lead to residential areas as the risk of spreading the pandemic is very high around these areas.

If you look closely, you will find the policeman guarding the road. They were allowing only those vehicles with essential services and emergencies. The others were told to turn back and some of them were beaten also.

The flowers from the trees have already started to fall indicating the onset of summer here in India. The spring lasts for a very short period here in New Delhi. The temperature has already clocked to 40° celsius and it will only keep getting hotter. This is one of the reasons, why I wanted to go back home as the weather in Kashmir is very pleasant.

This is a residential area with a small market as well near Kalinga Chowk. As you can see in the picture, the cars are parked on the sides of the road and not many people are walking. This place used to be very crowded normally. I think the people have understood that COVID-19 isn't going anywhere any time soon and probably that's the reason everyone is staying inside.

This picture is a bit blurry as I was crossing and I took it in the middle of the road. Although, there were no vehicles passing by I still wanted to be careful. You can see in the picture that there is no sign of any vehicle passing by on the road. I felt relieved and refreshed after a much-needed walk.

We had taken all the precautions before going out. We put on masks, took hand sanitizer with us and we were wearing gloves as well. After coming back home, we took a bath and washed the clothes we were wearing. If you plan to go out, please consider taking all the necessary precautions.

I hope you liked the pictures.
