Gene editing technology

Gene editing is a deliberate altering of selected DNA sequences in living cells. A DNA strand gets cut at a certain point and then these broken strands of DNA are fixed by the cellular repair mechanisms which exist naturally. The way in which they get repaired affects gene functionality, and this triggers the formation of new DNA sequences which are delivered when DNA is cut and usually acts as templates that generate altered sequences. Gene editing technology can be used for altering how genes function or even delete sections of DNA. For instance, transforming a gene variant that may cause disease to the one that will function in a normal and healthy way.

How Does Gene Editing Work?
Techniques of gene editing utilize specific proteins that are capable of cutting DNA in a targeted and precise location. Although the family of these proteins got discovered during the 1960s, the ability for them to make precise cuts at any point in the gene was utilized and recognized by scientists at around 2005.
Among the most recent gene editing technologies, methods based on CRISPR have become particularly promising. This is due to their low cost, ease of use, relative efficiency, and the ability to make several edits at multiple points in the gene in just one procedure.

Uses of Gene Editing
Gene editing has mostly been used in scientific research. One of the most common is in investigation models of human diseases. However, these techniques have much wider applications other than just being used for research. The fact that gene editing can alter any sequence of DNA, it has a limitless number of applications in living things.

It can be applied in human beings, plants, bacterium, or animals. The following are among the most common areas where gene editing technology is applied:

  • It is used in livestock and crops to increase yield, enhance tolerance to different environmental conditions, introducing pests and disease resistance, and much more.

  • Utilized in industrial biotechnology to develop “third generation” biofuels, as well as producing industrial chemicals.

  • Used in Biomedicine for xenotransplantation, controlling of insect-borne diseases, conducting cell-based and gene therapies, and development of pharmaceutical materials.

  • In reproduction, it helps in preventing the inheritance of disease traits.

In summary, scientists have now been able to access molecular tools, which have allowed them to manipulate the genes with an accuracy of high degree, and with relative ease as well. However, there exist several hurdles that have to be overcome. One major issue that does affect these technologies is how to deliver them securely in wherever they are being applied. Safety is key, as there are still risks associated with these innovations, although scientists predict fewer side effects in the near future arising from gene editing technologies.
