The Interesting Logic Behind Logistics

in #education6 years ago (edited)

I don’t know about you, but when I first heard the term “logistics” used as a term for business, I immediately thought “aah no, something to do with numbers”! And then I very quickly tuned-out (disappearing to my happy place where numerals do not exist). Maths (obviously noted) is not one of my favourite things in life and anything lying in its frame of reference is approached with much trepidation. But, for business reasons, the functioning of Logistics had me wondering, and to be truthful, I found it all very interesting.

And wha'dya know -  it’s not that “numbery” at all!

Let me start with an explanation of what it’s all about. Logistics is the management of the movement of products, services or people between the point of commencement and the point of use and is concerned with the administering of the smooth flow and functioning of things like transport, storage, and financial organising, etc. In a nutshell, Logistics handles all of the nitty-gritty involvements that it takes to get something from here, to there.

These nitty-gritty involvements, however, are enough to keep a company on its toes and they cover a broad spectrum of integrated concepts such as transportation, inventory, warehousing, material handling, packaging, security, financial costs involved as well as import and export regulations. All of this needs to be done while providing satisfying customer services.

This service starts at the point of origin, where a detailed inventory of stock is taken before loaded on to trucks, ships or planes.  The location and progression of transport mechanisms need to be recorded at all times to ensure the smooth and timely delivery of goods. Storage facilities may need to be utilized along the way or at the point of arrival until collection or distribution is exercised. Once again stock control is of key concern and security measures are implemented. Goods that are imported or exported across borders need to go through customs where they need to meet certain regulations and necessary documents and fees are often applicable. All of these concerns, and yes, even MORE, are what make a Logistics Company.

Logistics plays a huge role in the supply chain and our economy would not be able to sustain itself without this service. Thanks to the ever-evolving advances in technology, the software has been developed and implemented to make the life of Logistics companies easier. Non-the -less, it is a difficult area of business to run and such successful companies need to be applauded! If I wore one, I would take my hat off!
