Sensory Play Idea: Ghost Mud

in #steemstem8 years ago

One thing that I absolutely love about parenting is that I get to be a kid again! My son and I get up to all sorts of adventures and I am absolutely thrilled at having the pleasure of once again seeing the world through a child’s eyes. While we love science and doing cool “tricks”, messy sensory play is always a hit too. One of our latest activities that tickled our senses was making Ghost Mud – some spooky fun!

  • "Ghost Mud", in essence, has almost the same consistency and feeling of playdough once made, it is however a little slushier and I think the making part is more fun than the playing part!

How To Make Ghost Mud

This sensory play activity is suitable for toddlers and preschoolers and allows the little ones to explore the senses of touch, sight, smell, hearing (and umm, taste too if your kids is as inquisitive as mine).

  • The materials you will need:
  • 1 roll of toilet paper (1 ply)
  • A bar of Ivory or Dove soap
  • 1 cup of warm water

Instructions:

  1. Get your kid/s to remove the toilet paper from its roll. I think this is probably the most fun part! Use your imagination and make a fun game of it!
  2. Once all of the toilet paper has been removed, gather it all up and place it into a large container or basin (you could even make it in the bath)!
  3. If you have older kids, let them grate up the soap, or grate the soap yourself beforehand.
  4. Add your soap to your cup of very warm water, do this in a separate bowel to your basin for now.
  5. Give it a mix until it gets all slushy.
  6. Pour it into the bin with the toilet paper and start kneading and mushing the ingredients together until a smooth dough-like substance forms - this might take quite a few minutes and is a bit of hard work, but the kids enjoy it! Let them squelch it in their fingers to hear the funny sounds it makes.
  7. Add some more water if you think the consistency is too dry.
  8. The end result will be a smooth, pulpy and somewhat slimy creation!

If you seal your ghost mud in a Tupperware it will last a few days, otherwise if it does dry out, simply add some more warm water and you will be squishing it in between your fingers again in no time. This is an excellent sensory play activity for preschool teachers or for caregivers looking for ideas to entertain the kids at home.

I know right...there's so much cool stuff you can "make" with toiletries and kitchen aids.

Oh this looks like a lot of fun! I’ll have to save this idea for my 1 year old when he gets a little older!

I am sure he will have a ball feeling the sludgy "mud"

This is awesome! Thanks for the idea - I think my son will really enjoy this. Especially getting the toilet paper off the roll!!

Lol, yes my son enjoyed that part too!
