Caring For Abandoned Babies

in #charity7 years ago

A few years ago when the reality hit that my husband and I might never conceive a child, we were devastated. I longed to have a baby and a family of my own. As realization set in it was recommended to me that I get involved with a child related charity to one, keep my mind busy and two, to try and fill the void. At first, I thought this wasn’t sound advice, I thought being surrounded by kids every day would make my emotions more raw and desperate. But I had time on my hands and I was keen to be involved with a good cause.

I researched local charities in my community and found one that suited me, for its location, but mostly for its cause. Baby Hope House was my choice! From the moment I walked through their doors I felt a peacefulness fall over me, it felt like this was where I needed to be all along!

Baby Hope House was founded by two ladies, Sonia and Lynne in 2007, this is when they first joined their homes and decided to welcome babies into it as a place of safety. In essence, Baby Hope House is a home for babies who are abandoned or given up for adoption, here they stay until they are adopted. Here they are given the love, care and nurturing that all children require and are entitled to.

At first, I joined this Non-Profit Organisation as a volunteer, I’d go 2-3 times a week and help change nappies, feed the babies as well as bath them and simply play with them. At the time I joined, there were 11 babies under the age of 2 who were placed in the home to be cared for. Soon I became more involved and I was made head of the fund-raising committee and the became the secretary on their board – yes, they had me hooked! I was loving every moment of it! The lady that suggested I get involved with a charity was so very right! I got to mother children, even if they weren’t born to me, I felt like I had found my place in the world.

After about 6 months of volunteer and fundraising work, my husband and I made the decision to adopt. Being involved with Baby Hope House was all part of God’s plan – he wanted us to adopt all along! I had no urge to conceive and carry a child, I just wanted a family and children to care for. We became parents in July 2015 to a beautiful boy – everything leading up to the point where we held him in our arms can only be explained as spiritual intervention.

Since Baby Hope House is a NGO, they don’t get any funding from the government and they rely solely on donations and an income through fundraising.
