Ride Cowboy Ride Steemartists
The image I took at the Grand Canyon Rodeo here in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. This was my very first experience at a rodeo and I was totally enthralled!
I love to draw and I am adamant about always drawing by hand what I will be painting. Maybe it was all those long hours at art school sitting in front of statues with lighting on them, drawing them over and over and ,yes, over.
I started doing a series of the rodeo drawing on toned 184lb paper and using white gouache and sepia wash. Just focusing on the highlights in the photo and painting in those areas with the white. Next I take the sepia wash, also a gouache paint, and layer it into the drawing, going darker in some areas to give depth. You will notice that sometimes I start my drawing from the bottom up.
The entire piece is 9" x 12" and I'm excited to say, they have become quite popular..and they are also copyrighted. (no copying, no cut and pasting, please)
You can try it yourselves with your own photos. A very fun technique.
Warmly,
Sheila
